tach....skipping

Help....my sons 83 celica gt with 135000 miles....has been bullet-proof, but has just developed this....the tach jumps all over the place whether at idle or acceleration....it may also coincide with a slight miss, although not all the time...has anyone experienced this condition?...and if so....what has your diagnosis been and what repairs have been made to get rid of it....thanks in advance for your help......Curt
