LOL OK, here's my take, all JMHO, Joshua.
Matt was being flippant, but honest and correct. You'll only be able to do so much to gain performance without affecting MPG.
Cone cloth air filter, 82 Supra AFM, header, complete exhaust, underdrive pulleys, electric fan and good & expensive plugs, wires, cap, rotor and synthetic oils.
You're not directly messing with fuel consumption. The car will have way more get-up-and-go and the fun-to-drive factor will go up dramatically. You'll still get dusted by all manner of V6-powered minvans and SUV's though in any type of race of acceleration. But dang, the car will be way more entertaining ride.
But this may also introduce lean signals as you're putting more air into and getting the exhaust out of the engine. So what will happen? Possibly the ECU will receive lean signals from everywhere. Which will result in more fuel being dumped into the motor.
Regarding the AFM, I picked one up for $15 at a junkyard, a pick-your-own-part junkyard, not the kind that gets the part for you, in Santa Ana, Ca., around 4th Street, for any locals who are looking for inexpensive parts.
Headers, without doing the rest of the exhaust, is fruitless. The downpipe is 2" and midpipe 1 3/4"! This has got to go. At least 2 1/4" after the header and 2" after the cat. If you do the header and exhaust piping, a stock muffler will hold back a lot of the power, so this goes too.
All IMO.
