Grinding / rattling noise

Hi,
When I start the car in the morning it's the loudest. I hear a sort of light grinding noise with a rattling sound. At first I thought it was the water pump, but if I rev it up quickly and let it fall to an idle on the downside the noise is gone. Another thought was that it's the timeing Chain. Any info would be helpful. Also is a 1984 Celica GT a non-iterference engine?
