Re: Voltage gauge

Did autozone tell you what voltage your where actualy running? Some batterys will easialy make 18 volts. When I first bought my car there was a battery in there making 16v. It isn't really bad, but you want 12-14v.

I have never heard of the voltage meter going out, but I suppose anything is possible. Get a cheap multimeter or go to autozone and find out exactly how many volts you are pushing. If the reading is different than what the gauge is saying then you should replace the gauge cluster. This is easy enough, just find another from a junk yard. Make sure it is from a celica, not a supra.

If the reading is the same then it is probably the battery. You can live with it but to get the original 12-14v back you will have to replace it with the right battery.

It may, very unlikly, be the alternator. To check this start the car up and while it is running unplug the battery. Then check what your gauge is saying (assuming the first test showed the gauge is working correctly). If the gauge is still saying 18v then it is the alternator. Again you can probably live with it but the only way to fix that is to rebuild/replace the alternator. But like I said I doubt it is the alternator.
