i have you looked under the car and knowticed and gear oil tell tell marks ie output shaft try removing the shifter and inspecting for damage or loose bits did u remove the ruber shifter boot or the leather one the rubber one is a vapor barrier
your problem about the smell might be fixed by reinstalling the rubber boot u could also have gear oil on the under body of the car or on the tranny itself or exaust system get u some gunk and gunk the hell out of it if it comes back i would drop the tranny and inspect it further
