Clutch problems

On my 83 GTS, when i rebuilt the motor i put a brand new clutch, pressure plate, and throw out bearing, along with having the flywheel turned. now that its getting into summer, when ive had the car going for awhile and in the city, the clutch will slip all the way through 5th, wether im on the clutch pedal or not. also, the clutch doesnt start to lock up until the last 2 inches or so of pedal travel. does anyone know what might be wrong and how to fix it without replacing the clutch?
