Exactly right, 660 to 720 watts at 12V running 55 to 60 amps off of the alternator. But the electrical system isn't just run off the alternator. There is the batter wich is capable of massive amperage. Then there are capacitors and transformers to handle the individual extra requirements. The battery itself serves as a big powerful capicitor for the alternator.
To give you an idea of what I am tring to say. My new MSD ignition system will put out 460-480V primary from the box. That requires only 5 Amps at 5,000 RPM, less at lower RPMs. Then that 470V is sent through the Blaster coil, after that, when it finaly meets the spark plugs there is 45,000V to the plugs. This is only for a tiny length of time but at any amperage this is way in excess of what the alternator is 'rated' for. But is not bad for the elictrical system.
All sterio amplifiers (and all other components) are rated to peak power, on the loudest note, for the smallest time. RMS is usualy about half the number on the amp. My 600w amp has an RMS of 300 or so. There are still people out there running 1,000w or more RMS to their sound system. Often with multipul amps.
