picture a set of horizontal blinds, but somewhat nicer looking and sturdier. i would control airflow by "closing" them (rotating them much like a butterfly valve) or opening them with a little worm drive or rack and pinion (out of a vcr... ive got tons of that stuff). it would be made of sheet metal, but nicely done (not just the flat edge, probably a V shape, rotated 90deg counter clockwise, thus facing forward.)
