I'm guessing you've got an 85 Celica? If it's any newer than that, you've got a FWD model, and either an S-series or A-series engine.
If you've got an 85, then you do have a 22RE, just a later version that doesn't have vacuum connections on the distributor.
I wouldn't be surprised if aftermarket PCV valves are not the same size as an OEM part. They make as few different valves as they can, and use adapters to make them fit other engines. The Fram PCV valve I bought was the same as the 20R part, but they added a plastic 90* bend to the top of it.
Another reason the new valve might be "too big" is the grommet in the valve cover may have hardened up so much that the new valve can't slip in. Happens a lot. New grommets can be had at the parts store too.
