84 celica w/FI stubles under acceleration

I replaced the valve cover gasket for a friend of mine.   Before I replaced it the car ran ok.  After I was done it idles ok and
runs smooth as long as you accelerate very gradually.  I took it to 5500 RPM and held it there and it stayed smooth.
But, if yiou give it anything more than very gradual acceleration it stumbles and sputters.  I though it might be one of the
vacuum hoses I had to disconnect so I replaced any that were suspect and listened everywhere with my stethascope.
I checked all the electrical connections.  The distributor, plugs and fuel filter are new.  I checked the TPS, MAF, EGR,
and timing.  I've been through the fuel system, ignition, and emissions at least five times with no change.  After a week
of hunting I'm starting to talk to myself.  I'm ready to pack and leave town for good.  Any ideas?
If autozone Mike reads this, I loved your post about front end problem under heavy acceleration!
