Engine won't start '89 Toyota Celica

Today I was driving to work and when I came to a stop sign my '89 Toyota Celica started to idel low and and the engine died.  When I tried to restart it it would not.  I am sure it could be one of many possibilities, but I don't know where to start.  I have been having water pump problems mainly a leak, which I have been having to top up my radiator every day.  I don't feel this is the problem, but I thought I would explain the only problem I have been having with the car.  The battery is new, and the car has been running fine and was running fine right before it died.  Could it be the alternator?  Or something else electrical?  Any help would be appreciated.
