oxygen sensors

i've got a 91 celica st 1.8. A few weeks ago, the oxygen sensor popped off it's position bolted to the exhaust pipe forcing me to buy a new one. in the interest of saving money, i purchased an aftermarket part which was supposed to be universal but when i removed the existing oxygen sensor, i noticed it has four wires whereas the universal type only had two wires. anybody know if this neccesarily means that the o2 sensor is incompatible with my car or can i make some sort of adjustment and hardwire it to the existing terminal. i'm not sure being that i have a limited knowledge of wiring. any help is greatly appreciated. thank you.
