Thermostat working???????

I am trying to fix the overheating problem with my 83'GT. I have fushed the cooling system and looked over the hoses, there fine. I am now going to replace the thermostat, but I dont want to replace it if it is not broken. How can I find out if the thermo is working properly??? and how much does a new one cost(money is an issue here)
