valve lash??

Does anybody know if its ok to not have any valve lash,just recently i did a tune-up and decided to check the valve lash i did all that im supose to(#1 piston and all that stuff)but when the valve in piston 1 is supose to be kinda of loose they were not so i adjusted the valve lash and it feels more responsive when i press the gas pedal,is it posible for valves to get so tight by them selfs or was it the previous owner you think????
