83 Celicas, the clutch from hell, and engine stuff

So my first car was a 83 toyota celica.  I drove it for awhile, switched to another car, then switched back because the car was so reliable.  It had eventually earned a name, as loved cars always did -- The Beast.

The Beast got its name from hotel california's stanza "They stab it with their steely knives /  but they just can't kill the beast."

Unfortunately, The Beast did suffer from one recurring problem -- The clutch.  It's a stick shift, and it frequently leaks break fluid.  The clutch plate was replaced early on because the former own used to ride the clutch a lot, and wore it down.  However, I vividly recall the horror of drivin home from work to fnd no resistance on the clutch.  From that point on, I found that I must frequently bleed my clutch.

I've replaced the master cylinder 3 times, and the slave cylinder twice.  Perhaps I've done something wrong?  Has anyone else experienced this problem?  I it simply a lemon clutch?

As for the engine -- I was wondering what would be a good engine to toss into my car.  Something to give it a little more power?
