My 85 convertible does something similar. It starts out normally and sometimes after about 10 minutes of driving it goes from "normal" to full hot in approximatley 20 seconds. Then it pops back to normal all at one time like in 1-2 seconds. The person I purchased the car from chased this problem by replacing the radiator, sender unit, thermostat, and I think the water pump. Tracked it to the gage or ecu. I have not chased it myslef yet but it is definately an indication problem. Will Berninger
