No, simply that an 8-cyl will have better resilts than a 4-cyl. I don't really recommend test pipes for anyone, including V8s, because they really don't improve the performance that much unless you will be revving to 7-8000+ rpm.
Modern cats are very free flowing. That combined with a properly sized exhaust... the restriction just dosent become much of a problem until you really start flowing some exhaust CFM.

No, there wont be any damage at all. You could completly take of the exhaust past the header/exhaust manifold and run fine. Backfire and noisy as hell but it will run fine.
It has been said by many sources that you need some backpressure for torque, and less backpressure for HP. I am not sure if I agree with that or not, but lots of people say that.
