Waiting on the funds, So my car runs

(thought I made this thread before but couldn't find it.)

I know I've been talking about it for about a year now, But now that the family car is here, I can finally focus on the celica becoming what I originally got it for. A track only car. This thread will be updated as I go along the process of building it. Any questions I have will go into other threads so this one can stay purely for the build process.

GOAL:
To have the car built for the silver state classic challenge in time for the September race. the march one is just too soon for me to accomplish financially.

Obviously it'll be an early form of the car, and will be upgraded between each race (6 months apart roughly) and will be modified to fit each new class as I move up the ladder.

The goals I'm setting myself for the car. It wont all get done by September but I'll prioritize it So I get the important parts done by then.

Interior:

stock interior completely removed aside from heater
5 point harness'
racing seat (race not sport seats)
sheet metal dash with full gauge selection
Roll bar with harness connections
3 zone fire system
rally computer
helmet intercoms
Roll bar mounted hydration ("bite and suck" style straws and a mounted cooler for Gatorade or something)

Suspension & steering:

Rod end 4 links and pan hard
rod end control arms
custom wound springs and matched shocks
camber plates
custom 16" steel racing wheels
Strut tower bar
Manual rack

Engine:

22re engine(for now)
All EFI removed
45mm side drafts
Port polish and larger valves
bigger cam
H beam rods
High compression pistons
lightened crankshaft
early dizzy with electronic points conversion
msd ignition box /w rev limiter
electronic fuel pump
adjustable fuel pressure regulator
DT or OBX header
2.5 exhaust
glasspack (for manageable tone)
exhaust wrap
Engine damper (between engine and strut towers)
re-install passenger side poly mount (only running one for now)
under drive pulleys
Larger radiator
Electric fan
larger single wire ALT.
High volume oil pump

Drive train:

1 piece drive shaft with stronger U-joints.
Drive shaft safety loop
Manual trans conversion
Mk1 supra rear axle rebuilt with a LSD (gearing yet unknown)
HD clutch
Flywheel /W removable friction area
short throw shifter

Exterior:
Trim, markers, and passenger side door handle shaved (wind resistance)
Mirrors removed and plated over
bodywork and paint (bad paint does cause drag)
wind skirts (keep air from under the car)
mr2 spoiler center stanchion finished to meet bottom of trunk (finally)
decklid refinished so sheetmetal doesn't vibrate
LED taillights (making them myself)
headlights removed and covers left down in a fixed position (I'll have a normal set for racing that involves night driving)
Windows replaced with lighter weight safety glass (sooner or later)

Brakes
MkI rear disc brakes
SS braided brake lines
Front Big brake kit (hpfreaks has one)

And of curse the platform for all of this: A 1985 celica GT coupe

It all looks good in black and white, but why is everyone with an AT so bent on doing an MT conversion on anything other than a DD? I just don't get it. Everyone that wants to race should be leaving their AT cars AT. You want to go faster, but then you will lose time with shifting, unless you power shift, which will ruin the gears in the transmission anyway. An MT conversion will undoubtedly cost you time in the 1/4 mile that would probably cost you $100's in upgrades to regain that few 10ths of a second. Ultimately it's a wash, because shift times will still cost you in the end, no matter how many upgrades you do.

Looks like a well thought out plan. Hope you can get it done and take pics of the progress. And if you get into racing it serious enough, there is always the possibility of sponsors since older cars are making a comeback in the racing world.

Do you have a link to the rule book?

Is the motor going to make enough power N/A to make it competitive? You're maybe looking around the 200 hp range with the mods you've listed.

What are the rules for engine swaps? A 2RZ would make much better power and is a pretty easy swap Tongue.

I'll answer em all in one

AT/MT  it's for reliability and $. It would cost far more to have my trans rebuilt than to swap it out for a manual. plus if I decide to go into regular road corse it's already set.

200 hp should  be fine. All I need is to be able to hold 100MPH for 90 miles. and if my stock celica could do it (has done it) the new one will do it easily and would be capible of running in the next class up if needed. The races goal is to exactly average your class's speed rating so prolonged speed is all I need. In the end the winner come down to who makes it to the end closest to the exact time for the speed and distance. But you do have to keep over 80mph aswell so it makes time adjustments harder. (reason for having the rally computer)

as far as engine swaps there fine as far as i've read. I'm planning on a 2/3tg or a 18rg later on. I don't know if carbing a 2rz would work with the ignition. And there are no cams made for that setup. I want the carbs for simplicity's sake (keep it simple stupid). It's just less to deal with IMO. I'll set em for altitude and temp when I get up there and be done.

Just four things.

Don't rebuild a stock MKI/MKII LSD unless you want to do it many time during the season. Kaaz and TRD are supossed to make good Salisbury type unit that are a lot stronger. True trac is a good unit, but I dunno if it's suited for your application. Gearing can be easely found from 3.42 to 5.88

Second If you want a brake upgrade try to get Raptoracing/Jim King unit next GB: http://forums.celicasupra.com/archive/inde...hp/t-33754.html
Be aware that the stock spec brake lines won't fit. I bought almost everything needed for the front swap I just need to find some rotors. George had one set, but they had too many extras that I didn't needed (heat treatment, cross drill and slot).

Third: Stay away from T3 Camber plates. I'd prefer to race on stock strut mounts then on those. Honestly I have them and I don't even know why I instaled them. If you don't really know what you are doing, you won't mess with it once the aligment is good.

Fourth I wouldn't get a 18RG or a TG for race purpose. Chance are that you will break parts during the season. Since those engine are not common, it will take time before you get those. I'd slap a Supercharge or a Turbo on the 22r and call it done

One more thing good luck!!! Keep us updated.

Very good points rwdfreak and I am taking them into advisement.

But there are only about 5-6 races a year decently spread out and only two are silver stateclassic, So I have a good deal of time between. I probably won't make all of them either (not enough time of or money for it).

The more I think about it the more it makes sense. But I just don't know about the cost of going through the auto trans. To have it redone will be $$$. And I don't have the tools to do it myself, the spring compression tools are pricey.

Anyone know our auto's designation?

It's on your firewall - A40D.
You're better off with an A43D though - I have a bunch of info for them. I had a chance to score one for $50 last week but just couldn't squeeze the $$ out of any rocks or shake it out of any trees around here. wall

I'm putting together some info for ya and will PM it.
