If this from a Celica, I believe it would be a W55 with a different shifter location and gear ratios than the W58 that came in the Supra.

No, the Celica came with either a W50 (up to '81 IIRC) or W58 (after that), never a W55, that was in the trucks and 4runners. Whoever edited Wikipedia to include it is an idiot. However, I'm thinking this came from a Supra or something, the shifter and bell housing looks different from the Celica one, but I've only ever really looked at it from underneath, so I can't be certain.

The trans I pulled for my auto to manual swap came from an 84 celica and is a w55 and has the correct shifter location for the celica it came from. Bob, celica_83gts had a supra w58 for his 7m swap, it has different shifter location (it may be from a mkIII). The toyota's I've had were 4wd and had w56 transmissions.
Any way he could just check the build plate if he still has the car and check.

The firewall tag said W55? It's nothing new to find a W55/W56 in a Celica, because the W58 blew up and they replaced it with a W55.  You can swap the tailshaft and bell housing and it'll be exactly the same dimesions as a W58, since a W58 is just a W55 with different gearing.

The W55 only came in the small 2WD trucks, W56 in 4x4s, heavier 2wds, and 4runners, sorry for the confusion.

maybe my brain is failing me (wouldn't be the first time) but I remember it being w55, when I pulled it. I just checked wiki and it says
W55
Applications:

    * 1982-1983 Toyota Carina
    * 1981-1985 Toyota Celica
    * 1983 Toyota Corona
    * 1986 Toyota Soarer
    * 1986 Toyota Crown
    * 1983 Toyota Chaser
    * 1984-1988 Toyota Pickup 2WD with 22RE(EFI) engine
    * 2002-2005 Lexus IS300 (US Market only)
I pulled it from a very low K car 86000 MI, and from the condition of the interior I believed that mileage. I wouldn't expect the trans to have been swaped. Now I'm going to have to check every w series car/truck when I go to junk yard next time. :heh: Don't trust wiki :glare:

Bump for a South Carolina W Series trans

Yeah, wikipedia's full of shit, although the odd years they list (81-85) indicated maybe it came with the 21R on the aussie model? I dunno, but all USDM 3rd gen Celicas should have a W58 (if they have a manual), I know all 3 of mine do.

+1 on wiki being full of it, especially since they are correct about when they say the W58 came in the IS300, and Toyota did mot use two different 5 speeds in the same year/model car, ever.
1985 Celipra GT-S (driven by Chris):
6M-GE bored .50 over. 210cc injectors from......not a Toyota! Delta 272 re-grind cams. Carter high-flow fuel pump.
Pacesetter header w/custom 2.5" straight exhaust. Open air intake filter w/3" piping to TB. 65mm TB & ported AFM.
4:10 rear w/disk brakes from Supra. BillyM shifter bushing kit. Swapped most interior over to black. T3 camber plates.
935 Budget Coilover kit. KYB AGX struts. Eibach Sport rear supra springs. T3 Needle bearing upper perches.

Sorry it has taken so long to reply.  I didn't have internet for a few days.

So,  looked all over the trans to find any ID, but didn't find anything.  the car is gone.  The engine had been rebuilt and i never asked if the trans had been changed b/c i needed the efi engine for my 4x4.  when i googled the images for the w55, w58 and w50 and I thought it looked more like a w58.  So, the w55 and w58 use the same housing?  Another question.  If this is a w55, is this trans a possible swap to the 4x4 or are the gears different?

W55
Applications:

    * 1982-1983 Toyota Carina
    * 1981-1985 Toyota Celica
    * 1983 Toyota Corona
    * 1986 Toyota Soarer
    * 1986 Toyota Crown
    * 1983 Toyota Chaser
    * 1984-1988 Toyota Pickup 2WD with 22RE(EFI) engine
    * 2002-2005 Lexus IS300 (US Market only)

If I have misled you i apologize.  What are the differences between the w55 and w58 so i may tell them apart? :help:

gearing will tell you for sure... spin the output shaft and carefully count the number of times the input shaft turns... or if you want to pull off the extention housing you can count the teeth on 5th gear...
