Latest Forum Changes And Updates
« on: Mar 10, 2007, 08:43:27 am »
It's been quite a while since I made a record of forum changes. So here is a small list of the major changes I've made since the last news update.
  • Added "Are you a spammer?" question to the new user registration page.
  • Users can now edit the topic title and description of their threads.
  • Added a link to the main forum page on the bottom of threads.
  • Enabled fast-reply function for all forums.
  • Added more smiley emoticons.
  • Moved the signature box on the user profile page to the bottom and enabled normal signature styles.

Ummm... I'm a newbie, and don't want to spoil my reputation just yet, but...
Asking "Are you a spammer?" kinda reminds me of being at the airport ticket counter:

"Are there any weapons, or fruit in your bags?"
"Nope" (thinking, 'other than my razor, and that picture of uncle Judy')
"Did you pack your bags yourself?"
"Uhh, huh" (thinking, 'my wife did, anyway. Does that count?')
"Have your bags been in your control at all times?"
"Yup" (thinking, 'but I'm not always sure I'm within my own control, so we'll both have to take my words at face value')

What does a fellow who works at the Spam factory do with such a question?

Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled programming ... :pop:

Haha, I thought it was more like handing someone a form and saying "please check here, here, aaaaannndd here".

Its there for the same reason I make users copy a series of meaningless numbers into a text box. I am trying to break spam bots, automated programs that can sign up for a forum and post a spam message without anyone actually doing anything.

If the last week is any indication it has been really working. But I can't say for sure because I did some sweeping IP bans at the same time. I haven't seen one spammer reported since I made those changes.

In fact, it seems to be working too well.    I hope I didn't break something. Could a few of you guys do me a favor? Especially the firefox, opera and safari users. Try to register a new account and see if you run into any problems. Id appreciate some extra testing. Let me know the results.

I tried registering under 82gts and it came back that it was already registered but when I tried to log in using 82 gts it said it was not registered.  I was using Mozilla Firefox.

Humm... I cant seem to duplicate this problem, nor can I find any members named '82gts'. It is possible that someone tried to register as '82gts' before you tried. But never verified the account. So it was automatically deleted.

Could you do me a favor and try again with the same browser, but using a different name? Let me know if you have the same problem.

If you mean the base site (www.celica-gts.com) yea, I havent updated the info in ages. I really should go though it again. I know some of the links are dead and some of the information is outdated.

OK I used another name like 1982celica-gts and it let me sign in using Mozilla Firefox but after I get in and try to add a reply this is what I get:

Sorry, an error occurred. If you are unsure on how to use a feature, or don't know why you got this error message, try looking through the help files for more information.

The error returned was:

Sorry, you do not have permission to reply to that topic

Do I have to have a certain number of post before I can reply.  I signed in with my old account and had no problem.
