I believe it actually is a standard relay. You should be able to get a replacement without too much trouble.

whats up Santos,
I don't know if this helps, but the top worked fine until I had the timing chain and water pump replaced, after  I picked it up, it never worked again. Did you reset the relay switch I told you about?

Santos, instead of buying a new relay, just pull the cover off the fuse block under the hood, and pull one of the relays from there for testing purposes. They're all the same, so before you go hunting down a replacement, make sure that the one you have now is actually the problem. If that fixes it, then you've just got to get a relay. I'm sure you can get one at the dealership, or most parts stores, or someone here can mail you one that has a parts car.

Odd that a car goes in for a water pump and a timing chain, with a working top, and comes out with a non functional top. I would have taken it right back and asked what the hell they did to it. I highly doubt that it was merely a coincidence. <_<

Also make sure that the switch hasn't gone bad. Are you sure there's no power at the switch? Could it be possible that the contacts just aren't touching each other? We did have a guy on here only 2 - 3 weeks ago that had a power window problem exactly like your top problem, and all the same symptoms, and it turned out he didn't check the switch contacts after all.

What? There is supposed to be two of them in the fuse box next to the battery. Did you pop the cover off the fuse box and check?

:faceslap: That figures. <_< Well I would suggest a trip to the local dealership then. Also figures that not one of our topless GT-S owners has been on lately, or bothered to offer assistance with this.

Hey Santos,
I remember something about mercury switches on the rear seats, check that out, maybe thats causing the problem. If its thinking the seats are up, then it probally won't let the top go down, safety thingy?

is the switch grounded? jump the switch wires?

how bad would running your own switch/relay be?

You might want to check the mercury switches, I had that problem with the left rear seat after removing the seats to clean them last winter. I don't think an '89 would have the same relay.
