You might want to check the mercury switches, I had that problem with the left rear seat after removing the seats to clean them last winter. I don't think an '89 would have the same relay.
are the mercury switches on both seats or just one? have any idea where they might be located?i havent been able to work on the car if its not 95 degrees out its raining  but anyway thanks for the help

HEY,

IF YOUR STILL HAVIN THE ISSUE YOU MAY WANT TO CHECK YOUR CONDESSOR! mY DROP GAVE ME A SIMILAR ISSUE, I PUT IN NEW SPEAKERS AND BROKE THE WIRE TO THE CONDESSOR AND THE TOP WOULD'NT DROP. WITH MUCH TRACKING AND REWIRING THE TOP WORKED FINE. THE CONDESSOR IS LOCATED BEHIND THE SPEAKER PANEL IN THE REAR BY THE WINDOW SWITCH AND SEAT BEAT OPENING!

Santos,
I did have my buddy put new speakers in the rear, that could be it. Hey the P.R. parade is this Saturday in Aurora, you should put your car in it.

:( Never had any problems out of mine till recently too. But my problem is the cylinders so, I can't be of much help with the wiring. Mine goes down, but won't come up.  So, until I get it fixed, I will just do it manually. Too many things on the list to take care of first. B)

I have an '84 repair manual w/ wiring diagrams in it.
There might be something 'vert' related in there. I'll have a peek tonight.
The 'main-relay' 83GT was refering to, is the #1 relay. It's found behind the air-cleaner chamber, and is bolted to the shock-pillar. That's not the same part you're dealing with here.
I don't suspect either 'main-relay' is your problem.
It's likely the rear-seat switches paul-p referred to, or...

I've seen this in action on a working 1985 system.
The way it is supposed to work is this:
"With the e-Brake ON," you press and hold the button on the center console.
The system releases and folds the rear seats down, automatically, and then the top goes down, automatically.

My point is: Make sure the eBrake is pulled-up when you try to let the top down.
You might be chasing wild geese, that you'll never catch.
If everything else is checking out good, it's probably all good.
After trying with the eBrake on, if it still doesn't work, look into those seat-switches (over-ride them). But first, check the power top motor, directly to the battery. Perhaps that motor is fried?

Glad you figured it out, Santos.

NOTE: There are two mercury switches: one for each rear seat. They are screwed onto the outer edge of each seat at the pivot-point.
They tell the vert-top system, 'the rear seats are folded down, so it's ok to raise/lower the top.'

FYI: That 'relay' pictured is really a supplemental computer for 'vert top system control' ie: it really is convertible only. It is located above the steering column on the right, essentially behind the speedo-cluster.

If anyone really needs it:
I still have one in a box in my garage (sorted & saw it only a week ago). I parted out a wrecked vert a couple of years ago.
I also still have:
1) the black plastic trim pieces around the rear seat-belts;
2) the actual 'relays' and wiring from the trunk, near the pump;
3) Both front doors in near perfect condition (white/gutted). Remember, a vert VIN tag is on the driver door: "..RA65K.."

Hey Santos,
I remember something about mercury switches on the rear seats, check that out, maybe thats causing the problem. If its thinking the seats are up, then it probally won't let the top go down, safety thingy?
Damm, Crazy how time flies by. Great to hear your top is fixed. Any other new stuff done to the vert lately?

Mine doesn't work either, and haven't gotten to it yet, as I have my priority list, mirrors first etc., but interesting to know that the seat switches are mercury, I would have thought they were simple mechanical continuity switches. My problem might be as simple as low hydraulic fluid, as I have a relay clic, when trying to operate the top, just have been working on all the other minor problems, like interior lights, mirrors, but it is getting done weekend by weekend. They had a set on ebay last week for 75.00 which I thought was expensive, but just did a search and they are no longer listed.
They would be easy to bypass, if you needed to .

I'm working on a 1985 Celica convertible for a friend and have no manuals. Top won't go down. No clicking sound from relays. Parking brake set and rear seats will not unlock and fold down.
1. How do I manually lower rear seats?
2. Found the relay in fuse box and swapped with known good relay with no help.
3. Where is the "breaker' located in fuse box?

This is a nice forum guys. I restore FJ40 Land Cruisers and usually hang out on ih8mud forum.

the release handles are on each side near the front corner of the rear seat bottom.  You will get nothing until the mercury switches are engaged.  They are located on each seat back near the outside hinges.  If a wire is busted at the mercury switch like mine were, just connect the wires from the mercury switch together and remember to put the seats down BEFORE running the top up or down.

I found the "Vert" top circuit breaker buried below and in front of the fuse panel inside driver's side kick panel. You have to remove entire panel to see it. 10mm bolt holds the C/B clip against firewall. Had to remove bolt to pull C/B and clip away from sidewall. C/B resets by pushing hairpin/mini screwdriver into hole on top. Only took about 3 hours to troubleshoot the system!!! :wall:
