Huh... you guys are amazing...

You guys talk like these cars are the cats meow. They are not. I love them because I have had great memories with mine. IT'S A DAMN CAR!

Another thing also. Bob, before you go and tag people with things like ricer, please think about it before saying it. I know your an out spoken person, but you just might offend more then just Jason. "Ricers" is not a category, that would be a stereo type. The proper "category" would be "Tuners" or "Compacts". I have been called "gay" for having a Subaru and I'm not by a long shot. So please refrain form using that wordage.

Yes, the title states what the Forum is for, but Steve didnt make this site to shun other people from it for the car they drive or the fact the they just might want to beat the crap out of a Celica. Have you guys ever thought that if the cars get on the track and people like to use them, you might get more after market support? I bet not.   :poke:

We have a wealth of info here for people to use and we could not be hurt from learning some more. I know the active member list is low, but would it not be nice to have more people active from letting them feel like they have another home rather them more people telling them they are stupid for not having a Celica or telling them they need to get ride of there car because they are not worthy???
You're missing the point by a long shot Robin. Have you bothered at all to go to ANY of the FWD Celicas forums, and seen how screwed up they are? I don't want to see that crap going on here, and I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels that way. I suggest you pop into a few of them before getting pissed off that we have a good thing here, and some of us want to keep it a good thing. This is also not a Subaru forum, and we haven't shunned you, so relax.

That being said, why should we go FWD here? If I want FWD knowledge, I can go to a FWD forum. They already exist. I don't want it forced down my throat, and neither do some others here.

When I want advice on my 72 Cutlass, I go to a forum for 70 - 72 Cutlass. Should they then allow the people with FWD Olds Achieva's on their forum, or allow it to span out to literally decades, where the information gets to be too much to deal with, and the search feature becomes moot?
I have no reason to go there and really dont care. I'm not ""pissed" at all, just irritated.
As for the Suby, I get flak from every where, yes even here. But I was using it as an excampal...

I never said that at all. That, you took out of context.

Matt, I am active on 3 forums including this one. Why, when I have people here that know, go to another forum to ask someone a question that someone can help me with right here? I remember some asking about the Nissan KA at one time. I'm almost the only one here that knows them, or the SR for that fact. Same with turbos, do I need to go to a turbo forum if it's a simple thing?

No Robin, but again, you're taking it way out of context. You've added a Volvo project to your sig. This isn't a Volvo forum either. If you want to nit pick it out that way, then we might as well make this a forum for anything and everything with 4 wheels and an engine.

I personally could care less, and most people here probably could care less as well. We know you have a truck, and you frequent the forum to talk about everything under the sun. Nobody here is knocking you for it. We just want to keep this forum what it is.

The guys that have swapped out their 2XR's for another manufacturer/brand engine on this forum are very few. Less than a handful so far. Probably tops, a handful that have gone with another Toyota engine.

Lastly, if you want to get the most knowledge on a specific model/brand/whatever, you go to a forum that specializes, so if I was going to do a turbo I might come here for the 2XR factor, and join a site that is specifically about boost. :poke:

i agree with post #1

but i do see the need to seperate things.

but its not like its a problem, there is only 1 or two a month that show up, have a fwd and bother to post.  i bet the unregistered site traffic is pretty decent with this many registered and active users.  so the stats on some ricer guy being dumb and signing up and logging on before looking at a single post are pretty severe.

if anything should be done heres my .02 o nuff

re setup the same forum so the "root" of the forum tree is :

!!READ FIRST!!
RWD
FWD/AWD

you click RWD and you get the same ol forums your used to, why change a good thing.  maybe throw a "electrical" section in and vamp up the writeups. but if it aint broke dont fix it.

you click FWD/AWD, you get the same thing but the forum is blank.  see where it goes from there.  might be a need to fill out there.

hopefully most people will click !!READ FIRST!! there we could have a few suggestions and tips.  like...

look around and read a bit before you post
try searching
no really, try searching
how to host n post pics
the classic forums and you video
the difference between FWD and AWD
forum basics or how to post

I wouldn't mind at all if Steven did exactly that Nuff. As long as we stay with this, and the FWD/AWD is separated, then everyone gets what they want. I just wonder if there would be flame wars going on. That crap used to happen a lot back in the day, although most of it was Honduh owners coming in to start arguments.

:agree: with Matt.

I have a '70 Chevy van and am a member of the VCVC (Vintage Chevy Van Club), which is where I knew Leadfoot Vanner from (the one who put a 20R in an mid-60s Chevy van).
We have Zoomy's '68 Nova, so could be members of dozens of other forums dedicated to drag racing, Novas, small block Chevys, Classic Chevys...
There are forums for the FWD Celica types, there are forums for the 1st gen Celicas (that don't quite fit in here - wrong engines, trans, some suspension...) and even 2nd Gens.
If we go with what Robin is saying, "We have a wealth of info here for people to use and we could not be hurt from learning some more. I know the active member list is low, but would it not be nice to have more people active from letting them feel like they have another home rather them more people telling them they are stupid for not having a Celica or telling them they need to get ride of there car because they are not worthy?", we can just change the name to carsforum.com! That way, anybody with any sort of car can come on in and talk about whatever they want. :wall:
There are forums available for just about anything anyone could possibly think of. Why do we need to expand this one? What does it matter where this forum comes up on a Google search? Why does it matter how many active members we have? Are we trying to win some sort of popularity contest?

I think most of us came here for the 3rd Gen and 2xR/RE engines. I see no need for it to change. If Steven wants to add more, that is fine, as long as it doesn't dilute what we have here.
I've been a member for almost two years, and I know there are currently active members that have been members since its inception what - 5 or so years ago - Teranfirbt, Nukes, OldMage...
I think we all joined and have stuck around for the same reasons. We all share a common bond - 3rd Gen Celicas, and we accept 2nd gens due to the fact that they share most of the same driveline components.

If this whole thing is going to be this big of a deal, let's just leave it the F alone! We've managed fine this far...

Oh, and to most of us, these cars may very well be the cat's meow. If you disagree, then you do not need to be here, plain and simple. This forum should be all about those who appreciate these cars, no matter what other people may think. Hell - there's forums for AMC Pacers!

Now to go start a thread on :rice:

Why are we worried about a "reputation?"
Am I missing something here? Is there a popularity contest I am unaware of?

Most people who do come here looking for help or camaraderie with 2nd or 3rd gen Celicas seem to be very happy with our friendliness and help, and our quick responses to answer their questions that they couldn't get elsewhere.

Why are we worried about a "reputation?"
Am I missing something here? Is there a popularity contest I am unaware of?
I hope I understood your question and the context. I am going to answer this question from the perspective of the whole site as an internet presence.

The simple answer to your question is: Yes. This is a popularity contest.

How did you find this site? Google? Link from another site? A friend? Saw the Celica-GTS.com sticker?

Every site on the internet is involved in a popularity contest. Google calls it "Page Rank". Links are a form of social networking. Word of mouth is a popularity contest in every sense.

In the seven years these forums have existed, hundreds of thousands of people have come through here. Most either found what they were looking for and left or didn't find what they wanted at all. A tiny fraction of a percent signed up for the forums. Somewhere between one and two thousand people have posted (I'm including the old forums). You guys, the long-time active forums members are a fraction that. You're also exactly what makes this site popular. You guys are what makes this site valuable to average, 1-20 post members.

My statistics show that we need approximately 5 thousand unique visitors to get 1 new forum member.

If we do not have a constant flow of new members the forums will stagnate and die. I don't do any advertising for this site, the only way we get new members is being a popular site in our particular niche.

Increased popularity of this site as a whole, means growth of this community. Which IMHO is always a good thing. This site always needs to find new long-term active members, to do so we need to find a hell of a lot more average, just-passing-through members. Long-term active members are the only reason Celica-GTS.com exists today.

Hence, popularity contest.

Just to re-iterate, if I do open up fwd forum's they will be in a separate forum category. Very much like shonuff said (There would be groups for generations, not RWD/FWD). I suspect you would almost never have to interact with them unless you went into the their forums. This isn't likely to happen anytime soon, if ever!

I hope everyone had a good Christmas.

Now that I finally find myself with a few minutes to spare, I'd like to add my 2 cents.

I agree with ShoNuff's ideas. Allow an opportunity for others to get involved without altering what we already have.

I do not agree with the mean-spirited responses to many of the "misguided" posts we get. Rather than gently nudge someone in the right direction, some of us tend to go for the throat by putting the "offenders" choice of vehicle down. Not cool, anywhere, anytime. Particularly when, as Steven said, we are trying to grow as a community. I spend less time here than I used to, as I'm sure others do, due to this crap.

Before anyone brings it up, yes, I did reply to one of these posts with a ROFL. I was not laughing at the post, but rather at what I knew was sure to follow.

I sighed on, back in 2002 on the old forum. I had my 83 GT back then. When it was a nice car and I didnt know much about it.. I also forgot my old name after not being on after my car being totaled...

Later, Brad (Red85Celica) who I had know for years told me I should join. It took me a couple years to do it but I only did it after he convinced me that everyone was really cool and didnt mind my bad spelling....

I only came here because of the good referral I got from Brad. And another twist, I talked about it to nuff after selling him an auto trans to him over cragslist. I think Ryan joined the month after I did...

PR is a vary good thing....

All being said, I know what this forum is for.

Being friendly goes a long way, even if they dont have the same car.

Robin, very good point(s), and well taken!

A difference there though is that you and Ryan didn't wander in here on your own, asking stupid questions, or questions not relative to this forum. I've recommended this forum to a few too, although none that I know of have become members. I have heard reports back with extreme surprise over how much knowledge, information, and love for these cars that there seems to be here anyway.

I agree with many of the previous posts on both sides of this discussion and I think what people are really trying to get at is this:  This forum is a community of people with a similar mindset.  We like old celicas, dislike fwd, dislike stupid people, and yes, our cars are the cat's meow, deal!

It doesn't matter what car people drive, whether it's fwd or rwd, celica or supra, toyota or honda, it's how they act on the forums.  Fwd people get bagged on because most of the dumb posts come from someone with a newer celica coming here without knowing much of anything.  However, if some guy came on with a '83 GTS (the reason the site was made) and started asking how to install a huge wing and where to get a 6" exhaust tip and a cold air intake, we'd rag on him just as hard as any fwd person.  I don't exclude myself from this and admittedly hate rice (adding visual effects and noise makers that have little or no positive performance affect.  My definition that I just made up.)  I have no problem with newer, or older, celica people coming on here as long as they become part of the community and respect that we are the way we are, opinionated and intollerant in some aspects, knowledgeable and helpful in others.  If we get fwd people that can stand us, chances are very good that they'll fit in just fine, if they can't stand us they won't stay long.

Is celica-gts.com rwd only?  No, we welcome all people devoted to their quirky cars and willing to put up with some ribbing while searching for knowledge and entertainment.

Usually it's a prerequisite, owning at least a 2nd or 3rd Gen Celica though, when welcoming members with anything other than a RWD Cellica. Robin is a perfect example of that. If Joe blow comes off the street with a Skyline and wants to join the forum and talk about Skylines all the time, they have no place being here IMO.

I don't believe many of us have been completely intolerant of FWD people showing up here. For the better part of it, we have let them know, and directed them to a FWD forum. Yes we do rib them, and sometimes get a little on the mean side, (as text can be taken in many ways by the reader). I disagree that we "welcome all people devoted to their quirky cars" though. Otherwise, we would be Anything goes dot com. :P
