Wilwood brake install
« on: Mar 28, 2011, 10:16:53 pm »
OK everyone. I have not posted in a while but have been busy. I totally roasted the brakes on Yoda at Talladega. Even the Carbotech pads are a disaster. Still, I literally smoked everyone in my run group. The fastest was a 2009 custom 'Stang' that ended up 1/2 a lap behind me. The Turbo is working great. On to the point here. I will be finishing the install of 4 piston Wilwood calipers and 11" disks on Yoda tomorrow and have been taking pics. The install was not too hard but required fabricating caliper brakets and rotor rings. Simple install after that. I know everyone is looking for something like this. Not old factrory parts but real race and street bad-a$$ stuff. I am also adding cooling ducts and will doc that. They are MAJOR important on these cars. More other addons like the hood venting and ram air intake for the turbo to follow as well.

You can do this, trust me. The biggest issue is cost.
Got to be ready to run Sat at the Nashville Super Speedway, Yup, on the high banking. Pics of that will follow also.

Umm, mo offense, but I think that's a bit of an overstatement. Most of us don't push our cars hard enough to need near that much. I haven't yet overheated the upgraded (for a Corona) 3rd gen/Mk II brakes, but just did the "Cressida Big Brake Upgrade" (I needed rotors anyway), and figure with Brembo blank rotors and KVR pads will do about more than I'll ever need.
I am very interested in the cooling ducts though!

Let me add to my comment above though - if the kit was cheap enough, many might be interested. Just what does it cost?

I know, "If you have to ask..."

But that's like the $900 LSD. I'll settle with a factory Supra LSD, thank you.

OK so here is the rundown. The front brakes I installed use 11" discs and fit inside 15" wheels. Since there are no more "good" 14 inch tires I use 16" on the street and 275/35-15 for race all around. As such, I needed to fit them inside 15" or larger. The 11" discs worked just right. That's 1" larger than the stock discs. To install Wilwood brakes on the front wheels you will need some parts for sure. Here is what is required:
2 Wilwood rotors 11" diameter- Summit Racing Part # WIL-160-5840 $81.39ea
2 Wilwood 4 piston Calipers - Summit Racing Part  # WIL-120-6816 $124.95ea
1 set brake pads (street) - Summit Racing Part # WIL-150-8850K $41.60set
Optional - Racing pad set - Summit Racing Part # WIL-15B-3991K $78.76set
Brake line set with NPT adaptors - ORME Brothers Inc Part# OBI BRAKE2 $61 (covers both sides)
Brake caliper bracket - Fab these parts from drawing
Brake rotor adaptors - Fab these parts from drawing
12ea 8MMx20 SHC grade 8 screws and lockwashers
4ea 12mm-1.0x25 grade 8 bolts with lockwashers
4ea 3/8-16 SHC grade 8 screws with lockwashers
Red Locktite
Brake fluid (if using DOT5 or synthetic, drain and blow out the entire system first)

Continued on next post.

Start by removing your existing calipers, pads, caliper brackets, rotors and the brake hoses from the caliper to the strut connection point. Disassemble the rotors from the hubs by removing the 4 bolts from the back and keep the hubs. Plan to inspect the bearings, replace the seals and repack everything later.

The caliper bracket looks like this.

Bolt the caliper bracket to the spindle using the 12mm bolts with locks.
Next you can test fit the Caliper to the bracket.

This shows the parts for the rotor. The hub is in the middle. The adaptor disk is on the left and the rotor is on the right.

Next step is to assemble the rotors.
Using the 8mm bolts, locks and locktite, bolt the rotor adaptor plate to the hub as shown. The recessed side of the adaptor is up.

Now bolt the Rotor assembly to the hub using the original bolts with locks and locktite.

Next repack the bearings, with new seals and install the rotors.

Now a tricky bit. I designed these to move the rotor as far inside as possible to aid in getting cool air into the rotors. I did add cooling ducts but that is going to be the next posted project. As a result, the rotor may be very close to the lower ball joint. My lower arms are a fabricated design so they differ from stock. In any case, check for clearance between the lower arm and the disc at all positions. Turn full left and right and check with jackstands under the arms and the cars weight on the suspension as this will be the closest point of travel. Grind away only as needed to clear with a minimum of .040" between them.

Re-install the calipers using the 3/8" bolts and locks.

Now install the pads. These are REAL easy and are done with the caliper ON the car. Only need to pull the cotter pin and slide them in. Then install the NPT fittings in the back of the caliper and connect the lines to the originals at the strut then at the caliper.

Bleed the brakes. There are bleed fittings on top, bottom and inside/outside corners of the caliper. Start with bottom inside and then outside till fluid comes out then do inside top and then outside top till air is out. Install wheels as stand back and admire. These are my 16" street wheels so they would have allowed 12" brakes but I had to be set for the racing wheels where the tire availability dictated the size.

Brake caliper bracket -Fab these parts from drawing
Brake rotor adaptors - -Fab these parts from drawing

Question... do you have a PDF, or even Autocad format of these drawings?

Id love to machine the parts myself.

Looking very good i think this may be the next upgrade for the Celica after i get it running.

Thanks alot for doing the legwork Leon!
