For Sale Title Locations?
« on: May 18, 2012, 06:34:25 pm »
Hey Guys,

I have a small suggestion for the For Sale section. It's totally up to you guys if you want to do it, as this is just a suggestion from a newbie here.

I picked this up from another forum, but what they did was put their state/prov abbreviation at the end of their title. For Example "85 GT Parts for Sale [TX]" or "79 Celica Hood [ON, Can]" and so on. I'm constantly searching the classified section and find it discouraging to read all the way through a topic just to realize they are located half way around the world, or find no location at all.

Note: I find it extremely difficult to write suggestions and not sound like a stuck up prick at the same time.

That is one of the rules. If you go read the rules in the for sale section it was say the seller needs to at least have their location listed in this or her profile. It also says it should be in the post itself.
Celica. Impossible is nothing.

Yah, but that's a little different from seeing it in the title of the thread.  If you're in California looking to buy a car, you don't want to have to open up every "car for sale" ad just to see what state it's in.

I agree as well, but you would have to force all the sellers to list their location in their profile. Some people are paranoid and don't want to do it. So back to square 1.

Forum rules state location must be listed. If a mod would simply delete them if they don't have a location, problem solved!

But how often are the mods on here? No offense to the mods, but Teran's the only one who's ever around, and he's only on rarely. OldMage hasn't been around for ages, and it seems like Steven only gets on when he does an update or something.

I like the idea. Having location in the thread title would make the classifieds forums easier to browse.

Off-topic:

The lack of location information isn't so much a moderation problem as it is a maintenance problem. Anytime a thread anywhere on the forums gets reported terran or myself are fairly quick to respond, but maintaining good location data is a lot more work.

We would have to read every new post, find the location, and edit the post. When location isn't obvious we would have to ask the author to give us their location so we could edit the topic. If the author fails to respond with location information we would then have to decide if it is really needed for the sale to be offered (do you really need location to buy a shifter boot or fuel injectors?).

Then after all of that, if it is determined that we do need location and we haven't received it in a reasonable time then we would have to delete the thread.

When we first started this system this is exactly what I personally was doing. And it was proven to be counter-productive. Many people posting in the classifieds were first-time, and last-time posters. They register on the forums, making sure not to click the rules sticky, post their message and ask that people email them. Forcing me to delete otherwise good sales.

It's a lot of extra time and it's hard to say when and where being a hardass is beneficial, versus when it is detrimental. So in recent years we've just let the classifieds sections do their thing, letting you guys request location info from lazy posters, and only stepping in when a thread turns into flames or we need to ban the author.

That was exactly what I figured the response from Steven would be, and I thoroughly agree. Is it really worth the effort? Just ask the moron where he is, as it isn't worth the hassle when they don't. They are only hurting their own sale, and/or annoying prospective buyers.
I think if more people did at least put the state in parentheses in the title when they post, it might catch on, and also be noticed by newbs.
