Finally found one: 1984 Celica GTS
« on: Aug 20, 2012, 11:04:10 pm »
I've been looking for a 3rd gen Celica for a few months now, and I'm pleased to say I finally brought one home last week. It's a 1984 Celica GT-S loaded with (I believe) every factory option available for the model year. Everything works and the A/C blows cold! She has 180,xxx miles and has been taken care of.

The body is quite straight for a New England car, but there is still some rust. This is the worst of it:

The other major imperfection is the shattered corner light:

And I picked up this little gem for $1450! I'm stoked!

I will be doing some general housework on the car, such as addressing the rust and the corner light, maybe changing the steering wheel and shift knob, but for now it will stay largely stock. My focus is on dropping a 3RZ in my 4Runner, and that will be taking my mad money. Once the truck is actually down for the swap the Celica will take over daily driver duties, but I hope this doesn't last long. I feel this is a rare and special car, and I don't want to expose it to the daily grind any longer than I have to. The 4Runner is more suited to DD'ing, and I want to keep this as a cruise night/weekend car.

Once the truck is back up and running, I'm looking ahead to putting significantly more power through the Celica. This is a ways off and I'm still doing research, but I'm looking into the the Altezza BEAMS 3SGE swap. I've heard Australian 2SC motor mounts will bolt up, and I think people have fit the 6-speed tranny into these cars before. I'm still reading, but this swap makes the most sense from what I've seen.

The journey begins, and I'm excited!

yea hatches are annoying on the celica/supras they always rust away. You can find FGs ones. Corner lenses come and go, some good ones show up, but yea, only used ones are the option.

I know I can get them  :heh: but when I posted it before no one seemed interested, after all I don't think it's cheap, I think they're like 650+shipping.

can it be painted black to match the hood? ;)

seriously though, great find on teh car... like the others said, a hatch from a supra will work for sure if you can find one with less/no rust... i have one sitting here at my house, too bad you are in new england, as i am in texas... :)

Thanks for the replies and compliments!

JDreamer- I updated my profile, I live in central CT. And yes, finding Toyota enthusiasts up here is almost as hard as finding old Toyotas!

For now I'm gonna try and fix the rust, but a new hatch is always an option. I saw in the carbon fiber hood thread in the classifieds that there's a chance they'll start having CF hatched made. Now that would be tempting.

Do they use the stock window glass and latch mechanism? If so, I'll start saving my pennies.

Thanks for the link, I'll join up for sure! Definitely want to learn more about the local scene; I wasn't even really aware there was one. I do know about Old School Toyotas of Bridgeport, but that club looks a little too Latin for a white guy like me. ;)

jrmosier- Honestly, I haven't driven with the moonroof open (just tested it), so I can't comment on how it works in practice. I'll let you know when I have something to report.

Thanks again for all the feedback!

I know exactly what you mean.

I'm tall and white skinned but im mixed racially(im also trilingual, thks to that).

Those ostbpt guys are good guys, they might look intimidating and they might have different taste in music and modding, but once you go and talk to them about anything relate to toyotas....we all have the luv.  :)
Morgan,asg14,jason are some of our "whitest" guys in the ectoyotas forum.
Go and check it out urself  :heh:
