Greetings
« on: Apr 24, 2013, 02:01:05 am »
Hi Everyone,

New here, located in WA. Joined the forum recently to read up on some repairs and get advice. I inherited a 85 Celica GT, which my family purchased new off the lot. Been sitting for a number of years now, but I'm done with school and am planning to get her back into shape over the next several months. I know for starters going to need to replace the timing chain guides (fairly common problem I understand) and put some new seals on the engine. Who knows what else I'll discover in there! Hoping to turn it into my daily driver with a little extra power. Thanks!

The timing chain guides get broken up by a stretched timing chain, so don't just replace the guides, do the whole kit! They tend to last around 100k miles, and the head gaskets tend to go near #4 in around the same time, so it's a good idea to do both at the same time, not to mention easier.

That's a damn nice looking car you've got there!

:welcome: aboard!
I'm with ozzie on that. Go to engnbldr.com and get his steel backed timing chain set - and the top end gasket set.
If you're looking to increase power, while doing the timing chain, get a little porting work to the head and oversize valves with a good valve job, and a cam from engnbldr as well (either the 268 or not advertised 270). This will wake it up significantly! You can then can add exhaust later for even more.

It's taken a lot longer than I had hoped, but we're finally back up and running. Did the full timing chain set with gaskets and few other odds and ends like water pump, belts, etc. Took some time to polish EVERYTHING and am almost done painting the trim. Here's a few pictures.

Nice. What are the wheels and tires?
1985 GT-S Liftback: I named her Becky, because it is easier to justify spending money on a female.
1985 Convertible: Named Blackie. Was going to name it Midnight Star but he isn't really a Star yet!
