I'm still strongly considering using it.

I could probably wait and find a 8.8 with 4.10s disc brakes and lsd which would only be an inch wider. But then its got c clips to hold the axles which could be bad with big tires. It is also probably only a tiny bit stronger than the stock rear.

I guess the question is if the 9" is good enough to deal with that extra 2.5" on each side. I wish box flares were cheaper.

Its pretty good, It is from a 79 ranchero so It has pretty large drums 14 inch wheels barely fit over them. Definitely an upgrade in rear braking power for sure. The rancheros/torinos got a larger axle bearing than most 9 inches so that is a big plus as well. Its like a 2.76 ratio so I have to get a pumpkin, that is a downside, the axles are a differen't bolt pattern so that is a downside. I might need a custom drive shaft made, not sure yet though. I took measurements and there is a small possibility the toyota will fit a ford yoke.

here is something to get an idea of how it would look

I took a tape measure and ballparked how the back would look

That is with the same offset rim. The rear i probably can only get in another inch tops with rim offset the front could go out a bit with offset. Id run a wheel spacer but that would stress the bearings more and they might break with big tires.

trucks can get away with poke. Sounds like it'll need quite a bit to get working, but you were thinking of swapping in a Ford axle anyways?

Nah I was going to stick with the stock but the stock one I have is pretty screwed up. Its not too easy to find toyota stuff around here and I expect to pay anywhere from 200-300 for a stock axle. then if I do manage to find one it probably wont have the right gears. so I think I am settled on just doing the 9 inch. I wont ever blow it up. I already have it and I didn't have anything to put it in so I might as well use it I suppose.

Hopefully I can find some 4.11s at the truck show this weekend and maybe a locker if i can find one. who knows what other goodies i can find.

I also got the front lift today, It supposed to be 2.5 inches but the block is only 1.5 inches. Which i would assume would only lift it 1.5 inches. Whatever that is good enough I think.

just looked at your location, didn't realize you were in NY. Nearest LKQ location to you is either in New Hampshire or Maryland  :upset:

so I found some 4.11 ford 9 inch gears at the swap meet for 35 bucks! I think they are richmond gears that were taken out by the guys son who builds axles. He had like 10 boxes of various 9 inch gears. The nice thing is the pinion shim that came out is included so that makes swapping them even easier. The backlash might be recorded on them too but i didn't look. so really easy to put those in. I have to research if i need a different carrier or not since the ranchero/torino one had land speed record gears.

LKQ?

It's one of the larger JY chains. They have a nice searchable inventory.

Well, I just ordered everything to put the rear in and a detroit locker.

I got the front lift in today. Went to let it down and it slipped off the rear jackstands and if that wasen't shitty enough he truck crushed the jackstands as well. Can't a guy catch a break?

Cut off all the coil spring crap

Perches, brake splitter, brake load adjuster and two brake line holders.

Test fit, looks like the perches are good to go just need to drill out the hole a little bit.

Beefy

I also broke the rear down and yanked the center section. My dad said I could use the N case in the garage, its all stronger and stuff but It might take a different pinion bearing. It is from a 427 mustang. With any luck I can get the gears/locker set up in a case and who knows maybe put the rear in?

Getting a little further. I set up the gears int he housing and put that back in. Did some other little things too. Tomorrow i should be able to get it in the truck. not sure how the drive shaft is going to work out.

I also did some work for hammer in trade for his old 33x12.5 tires. They don't have a ton of meat left on them but at least they aren't dry rotted like the 31s.

Im not sure if I missed this. But what gears are in the front? Will it match if you have to use the 4wd?
