Mods, what can we do to stop the spam???
« on: Feb 18, 2016, 05:25:54 am »
Just wondering what we can do. This is out of control. Is it money? Can we all contribute toward a program or solution?

Maybe add a quiz field to registration? "The original ____ performance import." That might throw them off for a bit.

That would work. Or we go to "invitation only" so you gotta know a guy. Classiccelica is like that I think.

Why not just set new account posts to be moderated before being visible on the forum? Most forum software has that capability out of the box. I know a few forums that did that.

I would suspect that the spammers found a flaw or something to get around the sign up process.

Dori-Kaze is like that too. I just happened to buy a part from one of the moderators and started BSing with him. Next thing you know I find out he's a mod and then he got me in.

When you go invite only, your new memberships start dropping fast. Think about how many of our members have met another member before they joined the forum. The forum already has one of those letters/numbers in a fuzzy image things that's supposed to deter spam, but obviously it's not stopping all of it.  Mods approving new posts is IMO the best way, but it only works if you have enough mods to keep up with it, but right now AFAIK it's just Teran pulling mod duty, and that's really not fair for him.

I agree (it's what I mentioned above) but how many new (actual) accounts do we get? I think over the last month it was only a few, and about 200+ spam accounts. Maybe we need another mod to help Teran out?

Yeah, but of those few, how many have previously interacted with another member? I mean, we could always put up a "hey, email joe.blow@gmail.com for an invite" message, but that's just a crappy workaround. If we go invite only, we'll go from few to none to dead forum.

We aren't talking about going invite only, simply that posts from new members are held (not displayed on the main site) until a moderator approves them. It doesn't require a person to know someone to sign up. I just looked at the new accounts, since February 1 there's been 120+ new user accounts, and from scanning that list maybe 5-7 of those are actual members, not bots.

I've been on forums where new members are moderated. The forums inform the poster that there will be a delay before the post "goes live".

Still... A new simple question field at the start might make a lot less work for the mods and not piss off any new members. "What company produced the Celica?" or something simple like that. If we can stop the spam before they sign up it would be a lot easier.
