I know there's been a lot of spam, but actually there has not been a lot of spam by percentage.
Here's the block stats:
- Stop Spammer: 299,625
- httpBL: 386,153
That's nearly 700,000 spam attempts that have been blocked so far. The stop spammer count is actual registrations (that defeated the captcha) which were caught and prevented from activating their accounts. While the httpBL count is the number of visitors that were prevented from even loading the forums in the browser.
But there is a little more I can do to help cut down the number that get through.
- Verification questions
- Require verification to post on new accounts
I've just turned on the feature to require verification to post for new users. But I don't think it will do much. If the spam bot was able to defeat the captcha to register it will probably be able to defeat it to post. But it might help catch some.
The verification questions is probably going to be more useful. I've turned it on, but only with the default questions (simple math). I need some questions that require a tiny bit of logic that any real human trying to register on this site will be able to figure out.
My first thought: "What auto manufacturer produces the Celica?"
I'm open to suggestions for other verification questions, or any other tips for helping to reduce the spam! Please let me know your thoughts.
