And now they've started posting in other peoples threads (Sirdan's 4runner build).

Yah, the bots seem to be using the most recent posts list now. Annoyance++.

1st Gen Celica forum had the same issue. They were already a place where you could only see introductions only until you registered. They got spammed so bad they closed registration so you have to know someone on the inside to be able to get ahold of the main guy for an email to register.
Celica. Impossible is nothing.

I know there's been a lot of spam, but actually there has not been a lot of spam by percentage.

Here's the block stats:
  • Stop Spammer: 299,625
  • httpBL: 386,153

That's nearly 700,000 spam attempts that have been blocked so far. The stop spammer count is actual registrations (that defeated the captcha) which were caught and prevented from activating their accounts. While the httpBL count is the number of visitors that were prevented from even loading the forums in the browser.

But there is a little more I can do to help cut down the number that get through.

  • Verification questions
  • Require verification to post on new accounts

I've just turned on the feature to require verification to post for new users. But I don't think it will do much. If the spam bot was able to defeat the captcha to register it will probably be able to defeat it to post. But it might help catch some.

The verification questions is probably going to be more useful. I've turned it on, but only with the default questions (simple math). I need some questions that require a tiny bit of logic that any real human trying to register on this site will be able to figure out.

My first thought: "What auto manufacturer produces the Celica?"

I'm open to suggestions for other verification questions, or any other tips for helping to reduce the spam! Please let me know your thoughts.

Some others:

What's the chassis code for a 1985 Toyota Celica GT-S?

The mk3 Celica is a sister model to what other 80s Toyota?

What generation is the 1982-1985 Celica?

I'd prefer simpler, non-technical, non-historical questions. I want a grandma who just bought her grandson a Celica to be able to get through account creation.

I agree with this. When I registered I didn't k own the difference between ra64 and ra65. And lord knows wiki doesn't have it.

:agree: We could do something stupid, like "what year is your Celica", with anything from 1970 to 2006 as valid responses, but that seems easily defeated. I wonder if putting the question in a jpg, and then having some alternate question below in ridiculously tiny text the same color as the background color, would help. A spambot would easily find the alternate question but it wouldn't be visible to normal users.

Actually, that's incredibly hard to defeat because the bot would have to understand English as well as know production years. Unfortunately questions can only have one answer on the forum software.

I saw a kinda different verification system the other day, it was just the simple 4 character alphanumeric, but with a twist: as soon as you clicked the textbox, the image would change. Not sure how effective it is.

Nope. The new user post verification feature just requires that new users solve a captcha before a new post can be made. No manual intervention required.
