Your thoughts please? '82 Supra
« on: Feb 19, 2016, 01:12:10 am »
Thinking of taking a look at this car this weekend wondering what others think of it and the asking price?  Talked to the seller, says engine was rebuilt last year 30 over, headers, adjustable cams.  Says a little rust rear quarter driver's side.  Rear tires shot.  Runs great.

Are there any known concerns with the '82 Supra compared to '83-'85?  Anything special to look for?  If I look at it I'll take some more pics and post:

Thanks

Look over the back really good for rust. In the spare tire and rear wheel wells. I would want documents of the rebuild. There is an 85 with some rust there asking 1800. They are not around here any more so slim pickings.

Well I have not gone to look at this car yet.  I think he wants a bit too much for it and I really should be paying down bills right now (recently bought another Harley and a camper) but I very rarely see any of these cars for sale in my area (this is only an hour away) so it is very tempting.  Attached are some pics that the seller did send to me.  Car has more rust than I had hoped for the price, does have the rear window louvers which is sweet, no fender flares.  Q:  Did the '82 Supra not come with fender flares at all or was that an option?

IMHO  I would offer him less money for sure. pull the k member with lsd and put that in your celica. keep any parts you need and sell the rest.  afm, rear louvers, rearbumper, should sell fast.
Chop cut rebuild. Stock sucks FOR MOST CARS.

From what I can see it's too much rust for any offer over $1000. If you start attacking the rust in the rear you'll most likely run into broken studs due to the nuts rusting onto them. Definitely check the spots 1933beer stated. I also pull the rear seat bottom to check the corners when I look at these cars.

And this would be an L-type supra with no fender flares. From what I understand, the L-type came stock with an open rear diff. Not 100% sure on that info, but it's popped up a few times in the celica supra forums.

I think you're onto something there.  I assumed a LSD rear end like my '83 GTS but looking through his facebook photos I found these pics and looks to me like only the passenger side is spinning?

That's what I figured. I told that to a friend of mine who was parting out an 82 L-type, but he said they apparently came with an LSD if they were the Canadian version, but not the USA version. Kind of odd really.

Strange but afaik true. The f code diff does make it easier to find an lsd to install tho. also the '82 afm is a direct swap into our cars.

I agree with frontball, there's too much rust showing (which screams that there's a lot more that ain't showing) to justify a $3k price tag on a relatively stock supra. It's also missing the driver's side rocker panel cover, and those are just about impossible to find.
