If any of you have done the short sfifter mod on your car, you probably have noticed that the only shift knobs that will fit it are ones with set screws. I personally hate these things. The set screws keep coming lose and squeeking. I put a shift knob from a zx2 s/r in my car and it's great. Real carbon fiber and leather for $50.00 and it actually fits on pretty tight. I have pictures of it at   www.msnusers.com/seanvalle     if anyone wants to see it.

I dont know... But when i get my TRD short shifter for my AE86 i'll let you know how that on is. It comes with a TRD leather wraped knob and i'm guessing its going to be high quality considering its made my TRD.

Most people I know that have SS's or had them, hated them.  Usually because it's A LOT easier to miss a gear, and cons out weigh the pros.

Anyways, why don't you try some loctite of that set screw.

I think I got screwed on my panda paint job...

I have that mod on my 85 gt and also heated the set screw kind of shift nob so i whent and got the B&M billet shift nob,no set screws it has this things that look like sleves that go in to the lever part and its treaded on the outside so you can put on the nob, this is a very cool set up and not a cheap setscrew type of deal. :)

I've tried out my friends 84 GT with a short shifter, and i really didnt like it.. always missed 3rd if you tried to shift with any sort of speed. Too bad my old webhost went down or id post a pic of my shifter mod ^_^. basically its a yamaha 125cc piston with a big nut that goes on instead of the stock shift knob... i really like it, but most other people who have driven the car dont..

I love my short shifter, bought it from a guy in Ohio who was parting out his GT along with his Air/Fuel mixture gauge. Looks alot cooler then the old shifter too w/ the Momo shift knob.

The knob that I'm talking about is actually from B&M   The zx2 I had was a special model that came all hooked up from the factory.

with the talk about shifter knobs does the shifter from an 81 Celica tranny have a shorter throw than an 85 gts?  I know the trannys have different gearing.. it seems that the 81 shifter is really short..  wondered if anyone has noticed this?

I really don't know what the shifter looks like. I'll have to go to the junk yard and check it out.

Might wanna be careful with thinkin TR(u)D makes good stuff.  TRD doesnt make a thing.  They outsource everything.  Thier shifter nogs suck. :)  Atleast they do in the MR2 kits... and they use the same nob in everything, to the best of my knowlege.  Best bet is to go to LC engineering for your internal stuff and make everything else yourself.

Short shifter - cut two inches out of the middle of the shifter and reweld the threads on.  (or just cut new ones)
