Oregon Trail Rally changes
« on: Oct 01, 2016, 11:00:02 pm »
For anyone interested, I just got a notice that the Oregon Trail Rally is changing associations and sanctioning bodies. Full article is here: http://oregontrailrally.com/?p=1237

Last year looked pretty fun but I had an event already scheduled on the dates they had rallies near me. It would be fun to get a group meet together at a view point or even have a participant to represent the Celica in the rally. **nudges jrally in case he wanted to take a trip up to the PNW for the event**

The new roads on the Washington side were great this year, I think everyone's looking forward to running them again next year
Will you be volunteering or spectating?

I'll be there in Sweep S95 again

BTW, the view from the start of S9 Goodnoe Hills was awesome (as were the wind gusts and the 900ft drop - several competitors were nervous about the edge of the road)

Wow! Any chance they can get an event near me? I can't make it out to chehalis every month. Portland is doable. Grass valley isn't so much due to the wife not having anything to do. If they need a gravel pit I know a guy... (nudge nudge Keith)

Likely spectating if I can. I missed this year's event due to a prior scheduling that was more important. Would have been wonderful for me considering I reside in Goldendale where they based their pit operations out of and I know the dalles mountain road and the maryhill loops fairly well.

Goodnoe Hills (click on link, change to terrain view) was interesting for the 1st mile - me and the other sweep on that stage were chosen because we have the narrowest rigs for that shelf road  :heh:

Nice, what are the regs for this type of Rally?

Varies by class, but the vehicles range from sub $5k builds all the way up to Higgins' and Pastrana's cars which are 1/4 mill +
This was actually the first event by the new sanctioning body, American Rally Association.  Really promising launch so far compared to the old organization, Rally America.

Pretty cool. Nice that they allow rotary engines, but too bad for them limited to 2 rotors, while other engines can go to 5 liters :heh:

That's because a rotary with a turbo can stuff about 5 L of air into itself

The scenery in the area is breathtaking . . .
This one was from the first stage of Sunday, Columbia Hills

This was also Sunday, the downhill all-tarmac Goodnoe Hills Stage.  Pastrana was clocked at 140mph on the straight before this 90 degree turn.  I got the truck to lean a bit, but that's about all . . . odd thing, even though I knew the road was closed to traffic, I had a very hard time using the entire road/left lane

a friend of mine was co-driving when this happened: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIkVPtuju_o

Got Cone recap and photos

The open class I was looking at allows for 5 liter N/A or boosted.

Corax: Bummer about the crash, good thing no one seemed to be hurt really.

They were fine.  Actually, they got the car up the embankment and back down the road on their own before all the cars even went past.  They were at the start of the next stage with the wing and some other body parts Gorilla taped on to finish Saturday, and placed 4th in a field of 14 on Sunday.
