Small update, so I put the starter in. I go to bolt up the cable that supplies power to it and find that I can't find a nut that will spin on it  Looks like a M8 nut since M10 is too large for it and I tried both M8-1.25 and M8-1.0. I'm going to just order the nut from Toyota. So annoying to be held up by a single nut

On the super bright side a friend gave me an awesome F-Sport Carbon Fiber engine cover.

Got that nice toyota nut... that didn't sound right...

Anyways.

So I hooked up the starter, grounded all the ground leads I could find on the harness and plugged it all to a battery. But I must be missing something or I messed something up as I can't get my start button to illuminate.  Prior I to not realizing the starter wasn't there I could get the start button to at least illuminate amber meaning that there's something wrong. But now, nothing. I was avoiding running the wires into the cabin before getting the engine to initialize, but it's hard to make sure everything is where it should be when the wires overlap on each other. So I guess i'm going to start to run everything to where they should be and see if I missed something or fried something. Wish me luck

maybe forgot the brake pedal switch input?  the start stop button lights up amber (no start) or green (OK, start) when the pedal is pressed

Ah ok, thanks. That's good to know. I'd love to be back at that issue where it's just amber, right now I'm not getting any light up on the start/stop button. That's why I'm running the wires into the cabin so I can see them more spread out instead of a mangled mess. Maybe you might know this also, but with the key within proximity to the ignition button it should illuminate as long as it has power right?

SYSTEM FUNCTION
(a) Using entry function

(1) When the driver (or passenger) is sitting in the vehicle while carrying the key, and the engine switch is pressed while the brake pedal is depressed, the power source control ECU recognizes that the engine start operation has occurred and sends a certification request signal to the certification ECU. Upon receipt of the certification request signal, the certification ECU sends a request signal to the indoor electrical key oscillator. Upon receipt of the request signal, the indoor electrical key oscillator sends a request signal to detect if the key is inside the vehicle. When the key receives this request signal, it answers by sending an ID code containing a response code through the glass antenna to the door control receiver. Upon receipt of the ID code, the certification ECU analyzes the code. If the interior certification passes, then the power source control ECU sends a certification pass response signal. When the power source control ECU receives this signal, the ACC relay is switched on and the IG1 and IG2 relays are switched on in sequence. At this time, the engine switch indicator illuminates in green. Then the certification ECU checks that the power source mode has been changed and sends a steering lock command signal to the power source control ECU. After receiving this signal, the power source control ECU supplies power to the steering lock actuator. Then (via the ID code box) the steering lock ECU confirms that the certification ECU is certified and drives the steering actuator's motor until the steering lock is unlocked. After unlocking the steering lock, an unlock completed signal is sent to the certification ECU. Upon receipt of this signal, the certification ECU sends an unset command signal to the ID code box. Once this signal is received, the ID code box confirms that the certification ECU is certified, sends an immobiliser unset command signal to the ECM and sends a security indicator light off signal to the main body ECU RH.

(b) Not using the entry function (when key battery is depleted)

(1) When the driver is sitting in the vehicle while carrying the key and the brake pedal is depressed, the power source ECU recognizes that the stop light switch is on and sends a key confirmation request signal to the certification ECU. Upon receipt of this signal, the certification ECU drives the engine switch's built-in immobiliser amplifier. At this time the engine switch sends an RF wave communication signal to the immobiliser. If the driver holds the key up to the engine switch at this time, the engine switch receives the immobiliser RF wave signal and responds by sending a radio wave signal. When the engine switch receives the radio wave signal from the key, it duplicates the signal and sends an ID code to the certification ECU. Upon receipt of the ID code, the code is analyzed. If the certification passes, a key certification pass response signal is sent to the power source control ECU while simultaneously sending a sound buzzer request signal to the meter ECU.

Man I'm so glad you're on the forums  I didn't realize the system uses the glass antenna. If I'm reading correctly it seems like if the key battery is dead then it bypasses the use of the glass antenna?

I don't think it actually uses the glass antenna - might be something lost in translation.  The description I posted is from the "New Car Features" info for an '06 is350, should be basically the same up to just a year or two ago.  Whole bunch of other info sent your way to sort through, need anything else, let me know :)

Small update.

I was able to snag up some more parts for the Celica. I picked up the paddle shifters, traction control button, transmission shift linkage bar, fuel pump assembly and charcoal canister. Still nervous to drill into my fire wall to run the harness.

I started running the IS350 wiring through the firewall so it will be easier to locate all the components. And found a problem. I picked up a matching ECU/Keys/SmartKey Computer for a GS350 since they don't seem to show up very often and I need the full set to work. So the problem I ran into is that the GS350 rear computer for the smart key system is different and there are other associated relay/computers that are different in the GS vs IS.

Luckily a GS350 showed up in the junk yard and I pulled the body harness, but someone already got the engine out and the harness was cut at the fire wall. The IS harness is setup to have two sets that plug into each other. Going to see if I can merge the two  Wish me luck.

Tell me about it  :heh:

I'm definitely learning a lot about Lexus's immobilizer system

You wouldn't happen to have the wiring diagrams for a 2008 GS350 AWD or 2007 GS350? I'm hoping my friend will come through and get me the PDFs like he did for the IS350, but I don't know how long before he can try to get them.

Edit: Also in your experience does the immobilizer need to detect the steering wheel lockout?

I can get whatever diagrams you need today, I'll send to a a PM.

The ECU needs to see that the electric steering wheel lock has disengaged before it will crank the starter.  It's a safety feature, you wouldn't want someone to start the engine and possibly try to drive away if the steering wheel was still locked.  I BELIEVE it only disables the starter, and not the immobilizer.  So you should be able to bypass the "auto cranking until it starts" feature and use a push button to bypass the need for the electric steering wheel lock.
