RA65 Celica BlackTop Beams Swap
« on: Mar 17, 2017, 07:12:51 pm »
Hey everyone,
My name is Jared and i'm a pretty big Celica enthusiast. This is my project Aida. I am an ASE, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Jaguar certified tech with an A.A.S in automotive science. Anyway enough with the boring stuff. I am currently working on restoring my 1984 Celica GT-S. What I am doing is a conversion to the blacktop beams engine with 6 speed manual. Then i will turbo it a few months after i get things right....maybe. So im trying to gauge interest with everyone here if they would like me to do a right up or project thread.

You can. This swap has been done by local Lexus tech "corax" in his "nothing pretty build thread". But if you want to do a more detailed write up, please do.

I'd also be interested in watching your swap.  Doing an engine swap myself is beyond my powers, but the 3SGE (or almost anything) seems like it would be more of a car engine than the tractor-like 22RE (love the low-end torque, OK, but...).  A place across the bay is selling JDM 3SGEs with 6-spd MT and all the electronic goodies for under $1500.

Corax's "nothing pretty build thread" write-up is good...but all of his pictures have disappeared, so a new write-up with pics would be great!

I would like to see it too.   Maybe later I will get crazy with it when I have a bigger garage or when i buy another celica.  I always look.

Another thread would be good since Photobucket lost all my pics when they upgraded  :disgust:

I still have all the pics on my hard drive and all the info on wiring that you would ever need, if interested.
This is what mine currently looks like. I recently had an idea on how to shift things around a bit on the bottom end so I might be able to take the 1" subframe spacers off (without raising the engine, which would require cutting a hole in the hood)

the swap starts here-ish, but with no pics . . . meh

that is a bunch of good information. I will definitely try and do a good write up for people. if anything its always good to see fellow celica lovers working on their cars! Then engine and transmission should be going in this weekend. I will try and get a good post going after they are inside.

that is a beautiful picture....maybe my new work station background lol.

how did you deal with the power steering rack column? are you running a stock beams manifold?

stock upper manifold, custom lower pieced together from a couple mandrel u-bends.  the flange I made myself, though you can buy them online (SQ engineering or Xcessive, maybe?).  I spent more time than I probably had to installing, marking, removing, tacking, reinstalling, etc. until I got it right.  The inboard runner if the easiest one.  I also braced the lower manifold up to the bracket which braces the upper manifold in the hopes that it prevents cracks from vibration (brace not pictured)

Oh man that's some beautiful work you did. My welding is no so good so it won't be as clean. What I'm trying to do it make it work with no chassis mods. I currently have the engine sitting inside on the factory sub frame. I would post a few pics but the attachments options always says the pic are to big. I should have the engine and transmission in this weekend. I have been working with xcessice manufacturing to make a drop in kit. Hopefully this swap will be come a good solution for people looking for a 22r/22re upgrade.

You have to use an outside picture hosting site like imgur, etc.

are you local to Portland (Xcessive's location)?

No unfortunately I am in Raleigh Nc. What I am doing is sending measurements and practice fitting parts. The ultimate goal would be to see more of our 3rd gen Celica's out there. With more street-able power at a realistic investment. I know not a lot of guys have the ability to weld or fabricate so I am hoping before the end the year to had a drop in kit. Then my next project can begin. I want to drop a built 1uzfe into a gen 3 coupe. I appreciate your post Corax!!

What ever became of this thread?  Did it get moved, or just flop?
