Well, actually it was upgraded two weeks ago, but I wanted to make sure everything was working correctly and that I wouldn't need to revert back to the old system before making the announcement.
As for the upgrade itself, it's more of a hardware side-grade and major software maintenance update. New system, latest software, and many major efficiency improvements that come with new software. I would expect the forums to be a bit faster now because the systems running it are much better optimized.
An additional benefit of the latest SMF release is that the forum software now supports HTTPS, which I have set up and enabled on the web server. You can test it here:
Obviously this is a big improvement because of the additional security and privacy offered by encryption. However this also has a number of implications that may cause problems on the forums, the major one being that images hosted on other sites may not be loaded if I jack up the security restrictions. So for now HTTPS restrictions will be tuned-down and offered as an opt-in thing, meaning you have to manually type “https://” in your browser if you want it.
Please test it out and report your findings in this thread. If everything is running smoothly in HTTPS mode then I'll eventually force all connections to use HTTPS.
