The one thing you need to be aware of when buying an older car is to be prepared for more "old age" type part failures. A lot of these cars have rotted out bushings and rubber parts, simply from age. It's not a bad idea to have some sort of backup, if for nothing more then to get you to the parts store and beer runs while working on the Celica. I know, I probably should have mentioned that before you bought the car.

Hi, new member here. I love old toyotas, and have recently come across a nice 84 hatchback for sale. It has had the timing chain and water pump replaced, is a three owner car, and looks to be good. If it checks out in person, I was wondering how realistic it is to use this as a daily driver? I've always heard the praises of the 22re, but have never owned one. Would appreciate any input, thanks!

I've daily driven my 84 celica (22re 5speed) for a year now only issues I ran into was my water pump, clogged cat and clutch master cylinder all were an easy fix I've had no issues since, granite it needs a little bit of work but I've never been stranded. I trust this car over my other two any day. super easy to work on and cheap for parts. Highly suggest purchasing one!

Its absolutely possible to daily these cars, and are a lot more forgiving than a lot of its contemporaries as far as reliability, parts availability, etc...  if its a GT, the rear axle has a propensity to be hard to find, but otherwise most things are pretty easily sourced.  The only things that have stranded me is a catastrophic clutch slave failure and a couple of alternators going out, but after 400k both were somewhat expected >.<  Be ready for the comments of folks not knowing what it is though; i constantly get comments asking if its a delorean because of the design.  5

Always the Delorian comments from folks who don't know what these cars are!  We should commission a bumper sticker...  "My other Delorian is ACTUALLY a Delorian!"

It’s 10x’s worse if you have a silver lift back with louvers. I’m literally tempted to sell it as a delorean on Craigslist and see what I can get.

I haven't had someone mistake my Celica as a DeLorean yet, mine always gets mistaken as a Mustang. Until I point out the Toyota label on the front grille.
SELECT celica FROM toyota WHERE year<=1985;
