Security system
« on: Dec 28, 2017, 02:24:35 am »
I live around 10 minutes from the TJ border, lots of cars get stolen and taken there from my city. Any ideas on security besides a basic wheel lock? I sometimes take my ignition wires out lol.

What are you looking for? I mean, my ideas range from basic hidden kill switches, to rekeying to a more modern, less screwdriver friendly key, to a custom RPi/Arduino based push-to-start system with a breaker tripped if the original ignition cylinder is turned on. The level of difficulty is somewhat exponential.

Build a power Kill switch off of the mail Fusible Link and hide it somewhere in the cabin.

And build an ignition cut-off/relay -

So even if they figure out the power, there is no Ignition signal.

These cars have plenty of spots for False Switches, on one car my big Red KILL switch was actually the Start button - people are dumb! Most do what a sign says to do lol!~

Hub’d aftermarket steering wheel. Take it in the house with you. Hidden Fuel pump kill switch. Battery disconnect switch. You can’t stop a thief, but you can slow them down long enough to make it not worth it

Heh, set up an arduino/PIC to recognize a tap pattern to turn on a secondary fuel pump relay.

That would be pretty dope.

I think a kill switch would be sufficient. I am not that advanced in electronics so I will probably have to pay someone to to do it. Where would you suggest locating it?

Better: use the power mirror adjust buttons. Konami code ignition.

Like what? Power mirror up/down, up/down, left/right, left/right, then honk the horn twice?  :heh: :heh: :heh:

You could probably hide a starter kill switch under the dash on the driver's left side and wire it up so you have to hold it down in order for the key to operate the starter.

Exactly! Except it's up up down down left right left right Brake Accelerator :P

The common wires to interrupt are, as mentioned, starter relay, fuel pump, or coil power. IMO, they're all too common, and fairly simple to bypass. Assuming it's an EFI car, I'd go for the signal from the crank/cam position sensor (in this case, the distributor pickup) to the ECU. Unless the thief finds the switch or wiring, the ECU isn't going to fire the injectors, so the car will not start. The best part is, that wire already passes through the dash on our cars, so assuming you've got an installer willing to find the loom, tear it apart, and reassemble it cleanly, it will not be easily found.

As for a hiding place, I'd suggest behind the ash tray, so the ash tray has to be popped out to flip the switch. Another option would be up underneath the dash, somewhere you can stick your fingers in to flip it, but can't actually see it from either the driver's or passenger's seat.

I have a detachable wheel and a viper alarm and I leave my car in some scary places but never had a problem. I just take the wheel and anything else out of the cabin.

I think the best deterrent has been that our cars are so angular and old that they appear to be part of city structures or park art.

Mine is a 5 speed, that's a pretty good deterrent around here. Nobody seems to know how to drive manual transmissions anymore. I was worried about my coupe (auto) so I put in an AutoPage alarm.
