Hello from Tennessee
« on: Jan 29, 2018, 12:51:41 am »
Hi all, I recently bought an 85 GT-S. Been wanting one for awhile, but haven't had much luck till I came across this rust-free 85. Everything works, right down to the power antenna. Can't believe how well it runs and drives, even though it's a 33 year old car. It does have a few small problems: Rear differential leak (need cover gasket), fuel gauge won't read full even when tank is full, AC compressor locked up, cracked left and right front signal housing (a common problem from what I see), a slight oil leak, driver side door molding, and needs paint. I'll be working on it over the year to get it in full working order.

Great forum, hope to learn a few things here and maybe buy a part or two. I already discovered that some parts are in short supply or no longer available for these generations of Celicas.

Pics posted below. Inside is a bit dirty, burn holes in the seats from a past owner who smoked, aftermarket steering wheel (I have the original), sunroof and OEM radio still works fine, as does everything else electrically.

Welcome, and congrats on finding a clean Celica!!

This is a great forum, I'm confident you'll enjoy the crowd. And yes, there are a handful of rare parts, chief among which are turn signal housings... sometimes pairs in eBay run up to $300.

Regarding the fuel level gauge, there's a write-up in the how to section on cleaning and adjusting the fuel level sender in the tank. My gauge never reads higher than 7/8ths full and I need to do the same procedure with my car. :heh:

Got any pics of your car? I'd love to see, and others will too.

Thanks for the welcome!

I've been reading posts for awhile here and it's great to find a group who has the same passion for these generation of Celicas as I have. I've seen the turn signal housings as high as $500 on ebay or various places online. I'll spend $300 if I'm absolutely desperate, but will keep checking junkyards first.

Thanks for the fuel level gauge tip, I'll check it out. Mine is worse that yours; it'll only read about half full when filled up.

Pics are now posted in the first thread. It's nothing special and looks like a hundred others, but I'm happy with the fact that there's not one spot of rust anywhere. I intend to fix the small issues, give it a good quality paint job, tint the hell out of the windows, then keep it as a play toy. It'll be staying inside my shop where it'll never have a chance to start rusting. Then next on the list is finding an 84-85 convertible 5-speed GT-S.

Welcome to the forums and the wonderful world of Celica GTS ownership!  That is a fine-looking example you have there, I hope you're enjoying driving it.

I'm a bit far away in California, but I do have several corner light spares (right and left)--they might have dirt and spiderwebs on them, but I scavenge the ones with uncracked lenses.  If you don't have luck in your local parts yards, we can arrange for me to ship you a pair.  (Apologies if I haven't contacted other forum-goers about corner lights, I've come across your recent threads after the fact.)

Thanks a lot for the welcome and the offer! I may have to take you up on it if some don’t show up soon. Even though we’re not in the rust belt here in TN, we still have all 4 seasons (sometimes to the extreme) and a lot of deer to hit, so good corner lights are much rarer in these parts than sunny Cali.

Thanks Sigma and Pramsbey for the welcome.

Question: Does Photobucket hate you guys? I'm trying to indulge in Celica porn here

Never mind. All I needed to do was read a little and found the fix in the Lounge.
