Supra parts compatibility?
« on: Feb 15, 2018, 07:50:14 pm »
My intention was to buy a 3rd gen Celica GT-S, but they're so damned rare around here (no ads in almost a 1000 km/600 mi circle in 2 months) that I'm now also considering the same era of Supra as there has been 3 or 4 of those for sale in the same radius.

I always just assumed that from the firewall-back the Celica GT-S and Supra parts would be the same, but that's probably not actually the case.

So I guess a few questions: Are there any compatible parts between the two cars under the hood?
Are there any firewall-back parts which are actually different although one might assume they wouldn't be?

Thanks

The MKII Supra all came with F-code transmissions I think only the 85 GT-S got the F-code. I believe all the Supras also had rear disc brakes, but don't quote me on that. If the Supra had a manual and was a P-type it also came with a LSD. There are interior components that are different, like the door cards, handles, switches that are different. The interior has faux stitching on the vinyl and I believe the center section is padded. There's probably a lot more things, but overall much is the same or can be transferred over. The steering racks and steering arms have different ratio/angles. I think the spindle to strut case is at a different angle too, but not sure. But a lot is comparable in general.

Yes a lot is comparable.

The Supra interior is different as Sigma Projects mentioned, switches (like power windows) can be in a different spot. The consoles are also different. The instrument cluster is different internally due to the difference between 4- and 6- cylinders in the tach. The heating controls and the AC are more advanced and can come with automatic climate control of sorts.

The Supras all had 7.5" IRS and disc brakes. The 1984 Celica GTS had IRS but the smaller 6.7". The 1985 Celica GTS has the 7.5" IRS setup with the disk brakes (identical to the Supra, in fact, I've got a Supra LSD in my '85 GTS.)

SELECT celica FROM toyota WHERE year<=1985;

1985 GT-S
-Rebuilt engine: bored .020 over, oversize valves, new cam
-Thorley header w/heated O2 sensor at collector & all new exhaust
-Impact6 strut bar
-3.9LSD rearend, which is now slipping
-Lots of bodywork and new paint!
-New cd player to cover up all those squeaks and rattles
-JK short-throw shifter

Ozzie:
ops, yes diff not transmission. I blame it on sleep deprivation. Speaking of transmissions, did the W58 in the supra have different ratios compared to the Celica?
