Tires
« on: Mar 13, 2018, 12:19:53 pm »
I would like to replace the tires for my 2002 Toyota Celica GTS. I have checked out Toyo Tires' Proxes 4 Plus and it seems like it has good reviews. Is anyone familiar with it?

Not really, I've only had a very limited experience with Toyo Proxes R888 which are a bit different. What size wheel do you have?

Not sure about the Proxes line other than the RA1 and R888, but I ran Toyo Extensa A/S on my '03 Matrix XRS and they performed VERY well for an all-season tire. Pretty decent dry grip, and excellent performance in the rain and snow.

Have you tried out your Direzzas in the rain yet? Mine don't do so well :crying: Nothing like Snap over steer in a FWD car :heh:

Tires are definitely subjective. What are you looking for in a tire?

My go-to for all seasons is the General Altimax RT43. Reasonably priced, good dry and wet traction (for an all season) and I've heard they do reasonably well in the snow.
For a good summer performance tire that will get you through all seasons (that aren't snow) you can't do much better than the Michelin Pilot Super Sport.

If you want all of the grip and want to still drive in a drizzle, any of the 200 treadwear track cheater tires will do well. I've got a set of Falken RT615K+'s on my MR2 that are fantastic in the dry and work well in a light rain, but get pretty skatey under ~40 degrees F.

Dunlop Direzza Star Spec ZII's or Bridgestone RE71R's have more dry grip than the Falkens, but cost 25% more. I've got 2 track weekends plus a few thousand miles on mine and they're ~50% tread showing.

From there you're looking at R-Dots. 888's or NT01's are a step up from the 200TW crowd in terms of grip, but you'll be lucky to get a full rotation cycle out of them.

For UHP nothing is better than the continental extreme contacts.
For winter, there is literally nothing better than the three time seca rallycross winner, the General arcticmax.
For all seasons it’s a crapshoot. I run hankook Ventura V2’s. About 50$ a tire, but I go cheap because I kill tires, FAST.
