Celica GTS Special Edition?
« on: Mar 13, 2018, 10:55:02 pm »
Hi all,

I had a '85 Celica Supra hatchback back in the early 1990s and am itching to get another. There is a '85 GTS on eBay that the owner is calling a Special Edition. It's a two-tone red/black and is the notchback coupe. Anybody have info on whether the special edition on the car was real?

Will I be disappointed in the performance of the 4-banger vs the straight six? Does it have good power?

Thanks for your help.

Mark

Hello and welcome!

Whenever I see someone write "Special Edition" with a car ad, I always get a little skeptical. Are you referring to this car in particular? Looks like they wrote "Collectors Edition Special 22R-E" which is probably his way of saying the car is rare. It's more rare for a GTS to come with a twotone paint for sure. Otherwise there's nothing else special about the GTS other than what you already know.

The 22R-E's are pretty decent for what they are; single-cam, 2.4L truck motors. The torque is nice but you won't get much if you wind it out. That said, I've never driven a 5M-GE Supra so I can't make a comparison.

Agree... I'd rather have a 4AGE in a Celica (~same power, way happier to rev, and lighter).

Or a 4AGZE, like what's in my plans. All that rev happiness and the torque to back it up. :)

The most apt description of this motor ever. Motor swap it, or become despondent. Lol.

Just need the Japanese "high comp" version and an SC14 out of a Previa ;)
I've got the 4AGTE (yes, T) tuned out pretty well in my MR2, makes something around 170 hp on 8 PSI. If I had to fling much more weight around I'd go for a 3SGTE, all of the top end with some more grunt to make it civil. It's too bad the GTE is a pain to make north south :\

Probably when compared to a Supra. With shorter gears it's fun, but not fast.

But at least it's doable like one member did. Obviously a custom intake manifold makes it better.

I doubt even a built n/a is 300hp crank. I think my 4 runner is 0-60 in 20 seconds. I remember with my celica even grandmas would blow past me pulling off a red light. That was until I put the 5.0 ford in it. God that was fun, I will build another one i swear!
