Yea, that's pretty crazy. I forget how expensive the taxes are on cars in other countries. We generally don't have to pay much taxes on most cars.

If it was built in February of 1984 it would be a 84. Just to be sure, if you look on the placard on the door jamb (usually driver side) it will have its manufacture date stamped into it. Here's an example.

Also your VIN should indicate its model year, which might be different from your manufactured year. You'll see it as the 10th digit, usually for our old cars the last Letter in the VIN.

E for 1984 and D for 1983.

Cool! Thanks, gonna check it out, now you made me curious aswell! I've got it stored somewhere else so I'm gonna ask if they can make a pic for me tomorrow.
I'll keep you posted!

Lol. That vin pic is killing me! The “R” in “RN13 is not for “safety braking”, it designated the R series motor! Wtf! Although, the 22r was so slow, I guess you could consider it more of a safety feature than performance option.

At the time when it was sold though it was peppier than anything domestic made.

I don't know how true it is, but what I read is that Toyota thought for the American market they would want more TQ and also didn't want to spend the time updating emissions equipment on some of their engines. Still wish they had the 4AGE option available for the US.

Well that's interesting. Does the Netherlands use the same German abbreviation (ABE) for "general operation" approval?

The vin is confusing since the 10th digit looks like a 0, which doesn't make sense. If it was an 84 model it should be an E. There's no O or Zero for that placement. But then again since it's the 80's and a non-US vehicle can't always go by that VIN. And Toyodiy confirms that vin portion JT1CBAA63 goes with the model code that you have.

Upon looking at that specific model code it does look like in 84 that Europe got the revised front end, but kept the 82/83 rear end. I wonder if it was for the backup light placement? That's really interesting to me.

For fun your model code breakdown is AA63L-BCMQFW =

A- A series engine
A- Celica/Supra/Carina platform family
63-Model
L- Left Hand Drive

B- Celica Platform subtype
C- Coupe
M- 5spd manual
Q- GT trim level
F- Twin Cam motor
W- Designated for Europe sales.

Thanks man, very interesting!
As for the back up light, I wouldn't really know. You've already surprised me with all your cool facts haha.

I'm not sure what the ABE is, we have APK (if that's the same) general periodic test, that we have to do annually. A test to make sure the car technically in good shape to be still allowed on the road.

Ah ok. Maybe your Celica spent some time in Germany, from my googling the ABE nr label is something Germany does for marking cars that are approved for driving on their roads.
