Greetings from Maryland
« on: Jun 17, 2018, 03:28:36 pm »
Hello, everyone.

I'm new to the forum but not new to Celicas (though it has been many years).

I am a couple of days away from buying a 1985 GT-S that is located out of state and I will fly out and drive her back home over the July 4th holiday week.  The frredom symbolism is apt, as I have been looking for a car that I know I can work on myself and not need an advanced degree or special diagnostic equipment to understand what needs to be adjusted or corrected.

I currently own a Prius - and as much as I love and recommend the Prius (it really is an amazing piece of engineering) - when anything goes wrong it takes a while to get it figured out . In the past few months I have replacedd the battery pack, water pump, radiator, etc.,.  Right now I am experiencing the joy Prius owners know and refer to as the "guess tank" rather than the gas tank, because the car starts warning me that I am low on fuel then only takes 7 gallons to top off the almost 12 gallon tank (which incorporates an exandable bladder).  So...

In 1982 I bought my 1st car: a 1978 Celica GT. Can't tell you how much I loved my Celica.  Only a small part of that was due to the fact that it was my 1st car.

When the car reached almost 100K in miles, I took out the 20R engine and rebuilt it myself in my carport.  Even though I meticulously bagged and labeled all bolts for every part and component of the car while disassembling the engine, when I got the block and heads back from the machine shop and rebuilt the engine, I somehow wound up with a handful of bolts that I had no idea what they went to.   :heh:

They must have been spare parts, because the car started up the 1st time, every time from the minute I got the engine back in and purred like the tiger she was for another 120,000+ miles (including 2 cross country trips) up until the day someone rear ended me and my insurance company totaled her.

Anyway, I knew that car inside and out and when anything sounded off or there was something I could feel in the steering wheel I usually understood what was happening and I could fix it without issue.

The GT-S is essentially the same platform at its base level and I am looking forward to garnering that same kind of feel from her.  I also will look forward to the knowledge, wisdom, and advice found here...so thanks in advance to all.

Here is my new GT-S that I am looking forward to providing a great home to:

That is a clean looking Celica!
Are you taking the scenic route or making a mad dash down the interstate to get back?

Actually going to detour through New Orleans...does that count as the scenic route?

Nice, love that color. It should be Called Super Red II (3E5), it's what I repainted my car with. It was only available in 85.
