I cannot imagine how we will be able to maintain and share even the collector cars we already have in the United States—whether first made here or abroad. How will we be able to continue to use them?

I'll definitely do what I can to oppose the tariff ruling. We will often need parts from Japan, as we all have classic Japanese cars. 25% is just going to be ridiculous.

Hop on this, people!!

There’s been a “scare” like this that circles the internet every month. It’s hype for media clicks. It’s farce. Even if it’s true, big deal. The parts and cars imported are already *overpriced* for what they are.
Enacting this would just make them further unobtanium for the average joes.

The solution? What’d we do before we could import cars from japan? Use what we got from japan already. They made millions of 1uz engines in this country. I’m not worried.

If it happens, it kinda is a big deal. A lot of vehicles are produced outside the US, even from the Big 3. Models produced in the US will have a pricing advantage over models made even in Mexico or Canada. Will companies have a few years to move their manufacturing facilities before this goes into effect? Probably not. Who will get hurt worse, Detroit or Japan? You might be surprised: https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2016/06/01/japans-big-3-automakers-built-more-cars-in-u-s.html And I seem to remember pumping a bunch of money into Detroit not that long ago to prop up those companies, I'd rather not cause a repeat of that.

Of course, the new car market as a whole will take a downturn, jacking up used vehicle prices, so those $500 LS400s will now be $2500 cars.

Pretty much everyone at this point is against it, but I get the feeling Trump is just nuts enough to try and go through with it anyways. Why the hell can't the Republican party nominate a decent friggin candidate? I believe in the Republican ideals of reduced government intervention and free trade. This meddling goes against all of it.

google search "import car part 25% tariff"
it's all over mainstream media, not just some backwater site looking for clicks
if implemented, it'll apply to all imports, new and used . . . 25% is massive
so if it applies to parts as well, how much of the supply comes from overseas, even for assembly on US soil?  A lot

If it becomes a real issue then signing a petition won’t do shit though. Hell, kids are being ripped from families right now. Pretty sure a petition or whatever was signed to upset that and it didn’t do any good. I stopped caring about the government doings long ago. Actually, I remember it being 7th grade us history. When my teacher explained that the people of this country vote, and yet, that doesn’t mean the majority vote will actually get that candidate elected.

Best example was this election. Majority voted, and who got elected? This government is a sham ran by a different organization. A shadow.

If you think imports are already taxed a lot you should check out other countries. We actually get a lot of cars for really cheap in comparison.

Yep, between value added taxes and other taxes in general, a lot of other countries pay a lot more for high value goods like cars.
On the politics front, CGP Grey covered how stupid the electoral college is and how it's possible to win the presidential election with less than 25% of the popular vote.

On Club lexus you get a few guys from outside of the country asking about modifying their IS350 and everyone replying "just buy an IS-F, it's just much more cost effective" and then they reply with something like "I'm in Greece, an IS-F cost 6 figures" or in SE Asia.

Although 25% is a lot. I'm sure if it goes through it won't be so high. It would hurt volume sales that Auto manufacturers are so keen to keep. I think the US is the largest car purchasing marking in the world that or China.

It’s USA. China has a lot of people, but the vast majority can’t afford a vehicle. Even in this day and age. Also, China rips off other car companies. So real sales figures are shaded by that.

Either way, I submitted a comment to the site. I'd definitely prefer parts to be accessible to the average Joe.

Check out this graph, unless it's false, China has a ton of cars being sold.
