« on: Jul 16, 2018, 04:03:45 pm »
This popped up on my Facebook thanks to a shared post from MRP... someone in NZ is building a 4AGZE with a 20V head, Eaton M62 blower and is stuffing it into a KE70 Corolla. Some 4AGZE build inspo! Their page is called Yota Nation if you want to check it out.

From the post:

Someone ought to tell him he's built it wrong.... You definitely want the throttle *before* the supercharger, or else you get suuuuuper light-switchy reactions when you open/close the throttle...

I noticed that too, and was wondering about that myself... he set up the supercharger like a turbo, and had to run a BOV as a result.

With the inlet unrestricted like it is, the blower will always be pumping "full" boost to the throttle, which means that at less than full throttle, the throttle will always be seeing whatever the BOV relief pressure is on the upstream side, assuming the BOV can keep up (which it can't). It's going to be completely undriveable, lol.

3rd gen M62's do have a bypass valve, so I think it just depends on if the BPV will be controlled like a turbo wastegate & open up at closed throttle...

Interesting, that might make it work properly, or at least not make it a total light switch experience.

I asked him about why he set up the S/C that way, and this was the response:

"There is quite alot of debate around placement of throttle body in the system... before or after supercharger...
Having it after the supercharger (like mine) gives you better throttle response. The intercooler and all associated piping is all up to boost pressure and just waiting for throttle to be opened... sure you bleed a bit of boost off via the BOV when throttle is closed but thats no problem for me. This is why the blow off valve is mounted as close to the throttle body as possible.

If you ran an air flow meter this boost bleed off would be an issue but i am using a manifold air pressure sensor so it doesnt care what happens before the throttle body..."

Interesting, I wonder how controllable the throttle is. It might just be that the BOV vents enough air for it to not matter, but I've litrally never seen an OEM supercharger setup with a post blower TB, and those aren't exactly known for boost lag.

I wonder if he has tried the TB the other way on say another build. I guess if it drives well, I guess the theory doesn't matter :heh: Regardless the craftsmanship on it looks superb.
