Check for rust on the front and rear control arms. The one thing 22RE's are known for is clacky timing chains - if it breaks, it's new motor time. That however will require you to pull off the valve cover (after purchase) so you can see if the timing chain guides are still there. If they aren't there a timing kit needs to be installed pronto.  :yes:
SELECT celica FROM toyota WHERE year<=1985;

1985 GT-S
-Rebuilt engine: bored .020 over, oversize valves, new cam
-Thorley header w/heated O2 sensor at collector & all new exhaust
-Impact6 strut bar
-3.9LSD rearend, which is now slipping
-Lots of bodywork and new paint!
-New cd player to cover up all those squeaks and rattles
-JK short-throw shifter

ooh, thanks for that.
I bought it and put a couple hundred miles on it yesterday.
Definitely original all over, only two things dont work, power locks, and power mirrors. Electrics are good, I can hear the mirror motors, they are just sheared off internally, and the locks are good electrically, press lock, relay energizes, move locks manually, hear relay de-energize. So new mirrors and new lock solenoids.

motor has a small noise I can only hear with the windows down under load. Could this be the timing chain you speak of?

There's a couple threads for fixing power mirrors.

For the locks, it may have a door lock control module in the left door. It controls the automatic part of the locks and if it fails your locks can have issues. It also has a separate door lock relay, it's up behind the dash on the left side somewhere.
