My first gts 1985
« on: Sep 27, 2019, 10:50:28 pm »
I have just recently had the opportunity open up to purchase an 85 gts convertible. It has 168k miles, new rack and pinion, new top, new Power steering pump, alternator, and transmission. Has a very slight oil drip from the rear main seal. He is asking 5k for it what do you guys think or should I walk?

Assuming it's not a rust bucket, that sounds like a very reasonable price.

The convertibles are the ones that command the highest price. Just make sure all the convertible stuff is there, like the switches and stuff and like Ozzie mention check for rust. But yea a clean 3rd gen vert will easily go for $5k.

It will continue to go up in value as they are increasing in rarity.  5 speed versions in red are most desirable, but all variations are still nice.  Does it have the three piece top cover?  Many times these are missing or damaged.  All parts are still available if you look hard enough, but this car is really becoming more of a rare collectible.

Yes the 3 piece top cover would come with the purchase of the vehicle and it has no rust. It has been a one owner by a family friend. He has kept it in the garage at all times and we live on the east coast so no real ability to get rust. But I just want to make sure 168k wasn't too high for this car as it would most likely become my daily (just to and from work 5-10 miles a day)

Remember our cars are 35 years old now. Convertibles always had higher prices.

$5k for what sounds to have more or less everything is an OK price.
SELECT celica FROM toyota WHERE year<=1985;

IMO this is much more important then the mileage (22REs will go forever). These cars are old, and are going to have age related issues, like bushings and plastics that deteriorate with age. I'd ask the seller if the fuel pump, timing chain, head gasket, and control arm bushings have been replaced, as these are some of the more common issues. These cars are really easy to work on, especially compared to most FWD cars.
