22re knock sensor wiring
« on: Sep 29, 2020, 08:11:55 pm »
I finally got my car running well and driving fairly well, other then the lack of power and slight surging at anything over 2000-2500 rpms and on decel. When I was pulling the original engine I realised that the knock sensor wire was pulled out of the connector. Then noticed that someone soldered a repair wire to the inner part of the knock sensor wire, and neglected the sheilding. There is no connectivity between the inner, and outer wires so they didnt solder the 2 together.

From my understand the sheilding of the wire is supposed to be grounded, otherwise it will cause a check engine light, but I dont see any way in which the sheilding could make contact with ground through the connector considering where the shielding would be terminated. Is there something I'm missing, or just not looking at right?

I have a repair wire (PN 82998-12440), and a new connector (PN 90980-11166) from toyota.

In the wiring world, shielding used for mitigating interference only needs to be connected on one end or the other, so I would suspect the shielding is grounded at the ECU or elsewhere.

Yeah I was working on it today and I found a way to fix it. I knew it was grounded at the ecu, but I didnt know if it was supposed to be grounded at both ends.

Both of the part numbers I found were for a square plug knock sensor, and it just so happens the unused green wire has the same connector as the knock sensor, so I mutilated it, and connected it to the knock sensor wiring, plugged it up, and now the car acts like it's supposed to. No check engine light.
