Shifter Bushing Problem
« on: Dec 01, 2020, 05:51:28 pm »
My stupid self installed BillyM's W58 kit wrong (I think I didn't use enough JB weld), and the bushing has come loose in the socket for an unknown amount of time. It's been beat to hell, and a chunk has even come off the top part of it (pictured). It also caused the plastic bit on the bottom of the shifter to deform and come off, I had to pull it out of the hole.

My biggest concern/question is: should I be worried about this debris from the bushing? I could not find it in the part of the hole I can see. It may have been wherever its fallen for a while now, as its been a few months since my original failed attempt.

Right now I've ordered a new kit and plan to drop it in once it gets here. I want to make sure everything is good so I will be cleaning the area again, thoroughly, sanding it, and using more JB weld this time.

If anyone has some general advice outside of my main concern, I am more than glad to hear it, I want to make sure to do this job as best as possible.

I think you should be okay. My dumb a** bought an amazon short shifter that ate itself causing a bunch of shit to fall done inside the tranny. It isn't "okay" but i doubt it will lead to bigger issues. I've been okay

If you know that fairly large chunks fell into the transmission, and haven't spun it for a while, those chunks may have sunk to the bottom of the case and there's a chance you could drain them out with a fluid flush. My $0.02.

I was considering this, I might try this, if I do anything in the near term.

Glad to here your opinion on it. I don't know how long the chunks have been down in the tranny, because I replaced the bushing months ago. But I'd wager it's been a while, and I drive the car pretty regularly, so it's probably as okay as your situation.

For anyone on the edge of their seats, I ended up not doing anything about potential debris. This time around I installed the new bushing properly and it worked like a charm. Anyone with bad shifting I highly recommend the bushing kit.

No issues from any of the debris yet, so I'm hopefully in the clear.
